Casteviedan Legionary

Origin

“I remember returning to a desolate field of ash. To stand beneath the scarlet sky that scorched the lands dry. Was this all that remained of our beloved Casteviedo? Once a paradise our people had shaped, proudly, into a pinnacle of architecture and tradition. Now our woods have all decayed. Where rivers once poured, mud filled trenches now take their place, clogged by mass graves. The remnants of our cities are naught but ruins, occupied by pests and savages.   Do I believe this could have been prevented? That our valiant defence at the sacrifice of a million mortal souls was all for naught? No, even when Westport left us to die - there was a purpose in every second of our defiance. We alone kept the faith in Ysand. We would endure the fall of the bleak sun and fight through the long night and into the rise of a Golden Dawn.   When daylight broke the darkness around us, we were already blessed by Ysand. Our people were free, our cause was just, unlike the craven dogs of Westport. To the scum filled with greed, the chains of corruption will never yield - but to the children of Casteviedo, the Holy Imperator promised to restore our glory. That as a people who fought to the last dying breath, there is nothing lost that we can not reclaim. To a Casteviedo reborn in the radiant light of the Golden Empire, I will gladly give my life.   We may be revenants of the past, yes - yet, our people can never be ground beneath a conqueror's heel. Our crusade for Ysand has only begun, and for each foot of terrain we claim, for each temple we erect in his name, and for every wronged child of the Empire we avenge - our enemies never know peace again.   So let the Beast engulf the world in flame, let their diabolical sires cast down the skies upon us, and let the Dyskhari warmachine attempt to tame the crazed hound that resides in all of us. For they shall all crumble before the Bleak Sun. As our fatherland rises from the grave, let the world tremble in our wake."

Recruitment and Training

The Casteviedo III Revenant Legion recruits their members from the remaining three Castevedian tribes. While most recruits seek out the recruitment offices within Palmbay to enlist, many still enter the legion as sub-nomadic settlers that aid the army with logistics and supply. Thus allowing them to reinforce their ranks from the civilians they escort through the Palmlands.   Their training begins immediately upon recruitment, through sword and rifle exercises at the local barracks or camp practice grounds. Their cardio and strength training is generally overlooked as legionaries get it by marching for miles across the subtropical forests of the Palmland, or the broken remnants of Casteviedo.   Legionaries of the Revenant Legion receive special guerrilla warfare training. They are split into turma squads of twelve and taught the tactics and doctrines of their legion by the squad’s Decanus.

Weapons

Imperius Standard Carbine

Carved from the wood of palms and treated in plant based oils. Fitted with quality steel, forged in the foundries and factories along the Palmland coast. This breech loading weapon of seven shots, sometimes fitted with a scope for the unblooded legionaries, is their go to weapon for any clash. A mass produce, yes. However of quality and born of love and a will to protect that which they hold dear.

Imperius Standard Bayonet

With a slow loading rifle and limited bullets, the bayonet is the second best friend of the Casteviedan Legionary. When the enemy comes too close, they swarm out of the bushes and to the flanks of their foes. Stabbing their joints and weak spots with zeal.

Casteviedan Gladius

The ancient weapon of the Golden Empire. Every legionaries backup when all else fails. A quick thrust with the near dagger like sword can easily slide through joints and gaps in armour to strike at the vitals. The Casteviedian ones are famous for being a longer, more traditional gladius which is great for slashing encroaching vegetation out of their paths.

Armour

Casteviedo Heavy Raiment

The legionaries of the Casteviedo III Revenant Division wear a dimmed and bronze-tinted lorica segmentata above a dark green and brown camouflage coat. The frilled helmet, shoulderplates, cuirass, wrist guards and heavy leather boots keep them well protected in melee combat, while still allowing them to blend in well among the trees. Especially within their current home territory of Palmland

Tactical Intelligence

Strengths

  • Long Range: Has the furthest range of any base unit of the Auric Legions. Gives them an advantage over most other base infantry types.
  • Casteviedan Fury: Good Morale and Unbreakable Loyalty.

Weaknesses

  • Low Numbers: The Casteviedan Legionaries number far less than other base units, making them more costly to field and poor fighters in open fields.
  • Mediocre Melee: Rifled bayonet charges are often less effective than enemy melee units. Can be bolstered with skilled officers or magical buffs.
  • Low Munitions: Low ammo forces the legionaries to engage in swift attacks and retreats to resupply.

Tactics and Logistics

Manpower

The Casteviedo III Revenant Legion number around ~250.000 total legionaries in active service. They usually fight in lines of a hundred men, making up a so-called Contubernium.   The Casteviedans in particular specialize in guerrilla and ambush tactics. Engaging battles almost like a herd of zebras, through stealthbound ambushes and bottlenecks where the camouflage of their armour is designed to let the soldiers blend into the trees - they utilize chaos and illusion to deceive and decimate forces that outnumber them.

Leadership

The Legionaries serve at the bottom rung of the command chain. Their orders are given by a Decanus which serves as the senior legionary and pointman of a Turma - or a squad with 8 - 12 men by other words. These squads are part of the larger Optio led Contubernium which exists to mobilize legionary Turma around smaller swathes of terrain to flank, ambush and decimate the enemy.

Support

The Castevedian Legionaries receive the least support of any base troop within the Golden Empire’s Auric Legions. Their guerrilla doctrine usually finds them far away from friendly shores or railbound supply routes.   Instead they rely on their own troops, especially Logisticarius with carriages drawn primarily by warhounds, packmules and the odd smaller breeds of horses - for transportation of resources. Their distance from civilization usually leaves them without backup from other legions, with exceptions to the IVth and Ist legions’ aerial fleets and embedded Inquisitorial elites.   To function effectively, the Legionaries are reliant on their Ordinants and Venatores to rapidly communicate orders between commanders, and settle forward bases to establish their own manufactory nodes. By splintering five Centuries from a Cohort of ~5.000 man - they can further separate each Century into ten Contubernium and thereby rapidly scout and settle outposts near their chosen frontlines. Forging them into supply checkpoints, mortar and siege positions, and fortified fallback locations to avoid prolonged battles of attrition.
