Dahal Al'Ravan - The house of trade

An Oasis of Knowledge

Al'Rihar, the City of Coins, gleams golden under the desert sun. Minarets pierce the azure sky, their intricate tilework shimmering like a mirage, while below, in the cool, shadowy marketplaces, merchants jostle for goods gathered from the four corners of the world.
Here, where the sweeping steppes meet the endless desert oceans, fortunes are made and lost with the turn of a coin. Alliances, forged in the heat of the trading floor, crumble like sandcastles before the next sunrise. The air hums with the whispers of countless deals, the sweet scent of dates and myrrh, and the shimmering promise of riches beyond imagination.

Within the city's ancient walls, their weathered stones whispering tales of centuries of trade, lies Dah'al Al'ravan, the House of Trade. Housed within a small, meticulously maintained caravanserai, the school trains aspiring caravaneers in every skill they will require. Beyond the unassuming brick walls, a lush garden and spacious courtyard, lovingly tended by students and teachers, offer a tranquil haven from the city's bustle. Here, students learn not only animal handling – mastering the care of mules, Camels, and even the rare trihorn – but also the intricacies of trade, the ancient art of celestial navigation, and the essential skills for survival in the unforgiving sands, from finding hidden oases to weathering the fiercest sandstorms.

The Instructors

Master Zayd

Master Zayd, the school's founder, is a striking, if diminutive, figure. His wild, silver hair, seemingly imbued with a life of its own, frames a face dominated by piercing blue eyes that appear to see through any deception. His dramatic entrances into the classrooms are legendary, often heralded by the rustle of his billowing, vibrantly colored robes.   Renowned for his unconventional teaching methods, Zayd masterfully blends practical simulations with captivating storytelling, transforming each lesson into a new adventure. One moment, students might find themselves bartering for exotic spices in a bustling marketplace simulation, the next, listening spellbound as Zayd recounts one of his journeys through the Skyfire Canyon.   His eccentricities are as well-known as his brilliance. From mimicking the cries of desert falcons to the rumbling growl of a Ka'sharian Lion, Zayd often uses animal sounds to both entertain and sharpen his students' focus – a tactic that once sent a dozing apprentice scrambling for the door. His peculiar habit of collecting feathers, each meticulously cataloged and displayed in the school's aviary, adds another layer to an already complex personality. This collection isn't mere whimsical; Zayd uses it to illustrate principles of trade, migration, and even the value of rare and beautiful objects.   As the founder and foremost instructor at the House of Trade, Zayd has earned a reputation for his unique and highly effective teaching approach. His students leave the school not only with a comprehensive understanding of the intricacies of trade and commerce, but also inspired by Zayd's unwavering dedication to the art of trade. Many have gone on to establish successful trading houses of their own, crediting Zayd's mentorship for their achievements.

Mistress Kahira

Kahira is a striking figure with her long, flowing white hair and deep, knowing brown eyes. Her warm smile and gentle demeanor make her a motherly figure to many students, but those who underestimate her do so at their peril.

During trade negotiations, her calm exterior melts away, revealing a shrewd mind and an unwavering resolve that can leave even seasoned merchants reeling. One might witness her calmly dissecting a complex contract, her gaze never wavering, while her opponent sweats and stammers, realizing they've been outmaneuvered. The wife of Master Zayd, she is the calm and steady rock that keeps the bustling environment of the House of Trade in balance.

Kahira’s classes on negotiation, tradecraft, and other cultures are a rich tapestry woven from theory and practice, seasoned with captivating stories and tales from all across Aran'sha. She often leads her pupils on strolls through the vibrant bazaars of Al'Rihar, where they learn to observe the subtle cues of body language and the unspoken language of the traders cant. Her gentle yet firm approach ensures that students grasp the theories thoroughly, while her sharp wit and seemingly endless patience make her a beloved figure.

Kahira, like her husband, has a penchant for collecting small treasures from her travels – intricately carved wooden figures, polished stones from distant riverbeds, and colorful woven threads. These objects become more than mere mementos; they serve as daily teaching aids, part of vivid stories and illustrating key concepts. She also enjoys brewing and sharing herbal teas from the school's gardens, believing that a relaxed mind, like a well-steeped brew, is essential for successful negotiations.

Layla

Perhaps the strangest teacher at Dah'al Al'ravan, Layla is an actual talking camel. Little is known about how she obtained the ability to talk, and while she is usually quite talkative, she keeps the origins of this ability to herself—a secret she guards more jealously than a sultan's harem.

Layla's classes are renowned for their chaotic, but engaging and practical approach. One moment, she might be demonstrating the proper way to saddle a camel, her sharp wit cutting through any student's clumsiness with a well-placed quip. The next, she could be recounting the history of camel caravans, weaving tales of daring journeys and shrewd merchants, her voice surprisingly melodic for a beast of burden.
"Remember," she often says, chewing thoughtfully on a stray piece of straw, "a good caravaneer knows not only their trade, but also the heart of their steed."

Like any camel, Layla possesses a stubborn streak wider than the Great Sand Sea. Let a corageous student suggest an alternative route for a caravan, and she'll likely fix them with a disdainful stare and a snort that could shake the very foundations of the stables. These disagreements, often escalating into lively (and heated) debates, are a constant source of amusement for Hassan, who enjoys nothing more than watching his students spar verbally with their camel instructor. Layla's less-than-charming habit of chewing on anything within reach, a common trait among her fellow camels, often leaves her classroom in a state of almost comical disarray.

Master Hassan D'ra

Hassan, the gruff weapons and survival instructor at the House of Trade, is a towering, muscle-packed half-orc. His weatherworn green skin, a canvas of scars earned in countless battles across the wastes, stretches taut over a frame built for war. Each scar whispers a tale, and Hassan, a master storyteller, can recount every heroic deed behind them. His constant companion is Stormbreaker, a massive greatsword whose gleaming blade seems to hum with a restless energy. The towering weapon is his most prized possession, a symbol of his pride as a warrior and his many victories.

Hassan’s classes are a crucible for many a student. He demands absolute focus, pushing his students to their breaking point and beyond, ensuring they are prepared for any challenge the unforgiving desert might throw their way. One day, in the sun-baked training yard, he might be demonstrating the intricate footwork of a scimitar duel, his booming voice echoing through the dusty air. The next, he could be teaching the subtle art of tracking a sand lizard across barren dunes, sharing ancient techniques passed down through generations of desert warriors – techniques like reading the almost invisible tracks left by the lizard's claws in the sand.
Beneath his intimidating exterior, Hassan possesses a deep well of honor and a booming laugh that can shake the rafters. He is fiercely loyal to his students, pushing them relentlessly not out of cruelty, but out of an unwavering commitment to their survival. He feels a surge of pride whenever a student masters a difficult technique, and a pang of grief for those who fall by the wayside.

During lessons, he often regales his pupils with tales of how he came to possess Stormbreaker, stories filled with daring rescues, treacherous landscapes, and monstrous beasts. One such tale, recounted with vivid detail, involves a perilous journey to the Whispering Caves, where he faced a monstrous sand wyrm to retrieve his legendary blade.
In his rare moments of leisure, Hassan enjoys sparring with the city guard, honing his skills and maintaining his formidable strength. His preferred drink is Dhar’sa, an incredibly potent brew made from the roots of the hallucinogenic Serpent's Root. Hassan swears it enhances his senses, allowing him to hear the faintest rustle of wind across the dunes, and sharpens his reflexes, though some suspect it also fuels his already vivid imagination.

Kiri Al'hanir

Beneath Kiri's serene smile lurks a mischievous streak as wild as a desert fox. The House of Trade's celestial navigation instructor charts the heavens with a precision unmatched by even Zayd, but her heart holds a playful spark. Her understanding of the stars is a deep, mystical connection, whispered to her by the wind and sand. She knows their ancient stories, whispers of forgotten gods and prophecies yet to come.   Kiri's lessons transcend simply memorizing star charts; they are initiations into the language of the cosmos. She teaches students to feel the constellations' pull, to trust their guidance, but also to question and explore. She believes celestial navigation is sacred art, a dance between one's soul and the heavens, performed with a wink and a laugh..
This playful spirit infuses even her most sacred teachings. She guides students in rituals beneath the desert sky, teaching them to listen to the stars' whispers, sometimes with ancient instruments or forgotten star-songs, always with an easy smile, a knowing glance, or a cryptic phrase that leaves her students pondering her true meaning.   Her wisdom and playful energy have earned her the respect of her students, who call her "The Stargazer." But Kiri's knowledge extends beyond the House of Trade. Rumors whisper she is a member of the Celestial Circle, guardians of the stars' secrets. Her disappearances into the desert, her almost uncanny predictions, and the strange symbols she draws -often with a sly grin - fuel speculation. Is she scholar, trickster, or something more? The answer, like the stars, remains elusive and just out of reach.

Daily Life and Activities:

Academic Curriculum

The curriculum at Al-Qamar is designed to equip students with an array of skills and knowledge as vast as the desert itself - after all, one never knows what encounters await behind the next dune.
The small student body, never exceeding twenty, is drawn from the city's less fortunate families - and Zayd and Kahira have a keen eye for the children who show the most promise.
Students learn the ancient art of celestial navigation, using the sun, stars, and subtle landmarks of the shifting sands to chart their course. They study the languages of neighboring cultures, from the flowing kaharan script to the guttural dialects of the Bar'kashyr. Under the watchful eyes of their tutors, they learn to assess the value of goods, from precious gems to everyday necessities, and the intricacies of trade agreements.
Practical skills, such as setting up a sheltered camp, preparing for blinding sandstorms, and ensuring the well-being of their camels and other animals, are woven into the fabric of their education. Their teachers, all seasoned caravan masters, their faces etched with the lines of countless journeys, share their hard-won wisdom, recounting narrow escapes from bandits and the secrets to finding waterholes and the dangers of the endless sands.

Morning Routine

Each day begins with the soft chime of a brass bell, its gentle tones echoing through the courtyard and signaling the start of morning prayers and meditation. Students gather in the courtyard, offering silent prayers to the gods for guidance, luck, wisdom, and the strength to survive Hassan's afternoon lesson unscathed. A simple breakfast of sweet dates, warm flatbread, and Ma'khamsa fuels them for the day ahead. Zayd, Kiri or Kahira then lead lessons covering topics ranging from celestial navigation and regional languages to the history and dangers of the great caravan routes and the diverse cultural traditions of the lands they connect.

Practical Training

Midday is dedicated to hands-on training, a welcome break from the morning's academic pursuits. In the stables, the pungent aroma of hay and camel sweat fills the air as students learn the care and handling of camels, mules, horses, and even the rare trihorns, all under the watchful eye of Layla. First-year students practice the art of bartering and negotiation in the courtyard, their voices honeyed, stern, or silken soft as they haggle over imaginary carpets and spices.

Later year students, under Kahira's gentle tutelage, venture into the bustling marketplace of Al'Rihar. On these excursions, they learn the art of bartering and haggling, guided by Kahira's unique techniques for striking the best deals and navigating the market's pitfalls. They practice reading the subtle cues of merchants' body language, discerning genuine offers from shrewd attempts to inflate prices. Students must weigh risks and rewards in the blink of an eye, developing the quick decision-making skills essential for any successful trader. They navigate the labyrinthine alleys, where stalls overflow with colorful spices, exotic fruits, shimmering silks, and intricately carved ivory from the far reaches of Aran'shat, the scent of a thousand different goods mingling in the air. The air buzzes with the insistent calls of vendors hawking their wares, the chatter of shoppers, and the constant hum of haggling, all underscored by the sound of a hundred different animals prepared for the next journey. Kahira carefully selects the merchants her students will interact with—many eye-twinkling traders who consider it a mark of pride to be chosen for these lessons, eager to test their skills against the next generation of merchants.

Afternoon Activities

Afternoons offer a mix of study and leisure. Some students retreat to the shaded corners of the courtyard, the cool breeze rustling the pages of their manuscripts and trade ledgers as they review this morning's lessons. Meanwhile, others engage in lively discussions with their teachers, debating the merits of the northern route versus passing through the great Saltflats, or discussing the recent sighting of a giant sand worm amongst the road to Shi'balar. Quiet laughter and the clinking of teacups fill the air as students share stories of daring camel races or close encounters at night, sample Kahira's newest herbal tea creations, and forge friendships that will last a lifetime. Every other day, martial training takes place under the gruff tutelage of Hassan. Students learn to wield the scimitar, dagger, and spear, often enduring Hassan's scathing, but well-meant critiques of their form. Though Hassan's strict training pushes them to their limits, these sessions are hugely popular amongst his pupils, preparing them to face anything they might encounter on their future journeys.

Evening Activities

As the sun sets, casting long shadows across the courtyard, the caravanserai transforms into a vibrant hub of communal life. Students and instructors prepare and share evening meals together under the starlit sky, the smell of cooked rice and spices mingling with the cool night air, punctuated by the clatter of cooking utensils and the quiet murmur of conversation. Afterward, some students gather for lessons in celestial navigation under Kiri's tutelage, their faces illuminated by the light of a single lantern, learning to identify the constellations that will guide them across the endless sands. Others gather in the courtyard, listening to stories of legendary caravans, daring rescues, and the rich cultures of the lands beyond the desert, tales told with passion and humor by their teachers. A few, however, their faces etched with concentration, pore over trade ledgers late into the night, by the flickering light of oil lamps. The complexities of trade weigh heavily on their young shoulders as they wrestle with figures and calculations, knowing that daunting challenges - and the weight of responsibility - await them.

A Legacy of Wisdom

Graduates of Al-Qamar depart with a wealth of experience and profound knowledge, ready to immediately begin their careers as merchants and caravan leaders. Many of the school's alumni have amassed fortunes, and generously support Al-Qamar through coin and deeds, ensuring that future generations have the same opportunities. The lifelong bonds forged at Al-Qamar form a powerful network of support and collaboration that extends far beyond the academy’s walls, ensuring that graduates always have allies in their endeavors. Each graduate receives an ornate pendant at graduation, magically imbued by Zayd himself. These pendants are meticulously attuned to the wearer, becoming unbearably heavy and impossible to lift in the hands of another. Ingeniously, they also serve as a perfectly balanced scale weight, a practical tool for future trade. Beyond its practical use, however, the pendant also reminds graduates of the values instilled at Al-Qamar: integrity, perseverance, and unflinching stoicism in the face of danger. It is a badge of honor each of them carries proudly into the world.

Trader's Cant

The intricacies of trade are hard to master. Knowing when to offer a lower price, when to feign disinterest, and when to walk away entirely can be the difference between profit and ruin. Subtle signs are used in negotiations that are as much a language as the secretive and utterly silent "beggars tongue" or the handsigns of the silent monks of Milat'hir.

Common Signals

  • Touching the Ear
  • This signal often indicates that the trader is willing to listen to a counteroffer. It’s a subtle way of showing openness to negotiation without explicitly stating it.
  • Tapping the Fingers
  • Lightly tapping fingers on the table or a nearby surface can signal impatience or a desire to speed up the negotiation. It’s a gentle nudge to the other party to make a decision.
  • Rubbing the Chin
  • This gesture often signifies contemplation. The trader is weighing the pros and cons of the offer, and it’s a cue for the other party to either sweeten the deal or hold firm.
  • Looking Away Briefly
  • A brief glance away from the other party can indicate that the trader is not entirely satisfied with the current offer. It’s a subtle hint that more negotiation is needed.
  • Nodding Slightly
  • A slight nod can be a sign of agreement or acceptance. It’s a way to show that the trader is leaning towards accepting the offer, encouraging the other party to finalize the deal.
  • Touching the goods
  • Touching a specific part of the merchandise (e.g., the weave of a fabric, the heft of a tool) could subtly question its quality.

    Notable Alumni

    Kadir Ma'shadir, the honeyed voice

Kadir, a graduate of the House of Trade's class of 360 a.E., is a master of words. Blessed with a silver tongue and a keen understanding of human nature, he excelled at negotiation and diplomacy. Kadir could charm even the most stubborn merchant into a favorable deal, and his reputation for fairness and integrity earned him the trust of traders from across the land.
    Nadia Al'hassan, the red traveller

Nadia, a graduate of the House of Trade's class of 364 a.E., is a force of nature. Known for her fiery temper, red hair and an insatiable wanderlust, she carved a reputation as a daring explorer and a shrewd trader by blood and deed.
While her explosive personality sometimes ruffled feathers, her courage and determination are undeniable. Nadia specializes in charting new and dangerous routes, leading expeditions into uncharted territories. She mapped previously unknown oases, navigated treacherous canyons, and even ventured into the forbidden jungles.
Her expeditions were often fraught with peril, from encounters with monstrous sand wyrms to skirmishes with native tribes. But Nadia always returned, her caravans laden with exotic goods and tales of adventure captivating the markets of Al'Rihar. Though some merchants find her methods too reckless, none can deny her success.

    Beasts of Burden

Across the endless sands, the weight of a trader's fortune rests on the backs of hardy beasts. Camels, enduring and majestic, are the backbone of kaharan trade, capable of traversing even the harshest deserts. Mules, strong and steadfast, stoically bear the weight of trade, while horses offer fleeting speed. And rarely, even stranger creatures, like the mighty trihorn from the eastern steppes are used, capable of conquering any terrain.

It's really nice how you described the teachers' peculiarities. And a talking camel? It would be funny to see that. Otherwise, a great concept, I particularly like the amulet as a certificate that you attended the school.   It's also really nice that you've started isolating the pictures so that they "blend" better with the background. I know that's always a bit more time-consuming, but the effort is really worth it.

Summer Camp is back! Rippling waves lead you to my answers of this year's prompts.

Thank you so much Blue - I was of two minds about isolating the pictures, but it was really well received so far. I might just stick to it. You might hear more about the amulet and the talking camel soon. Glad you liked the school and thanks for dropping by!

    Oct 13, 2024 19:07

Ah, financing - that was one of the parts I thought about but couldnt include due to word limits. However, there are no such restrictions now. However, it is a "trade" school, so they will probably find a few ways to fill their coffers. I'll also add a timeline so everyone can see what happened when to the school. Last, but not least - the Kahira name mixup has been fixed already. Thank you so much for visiting the house of trade, glad you enjoyed your stay!

I love the idea of a school that teaches the art of running a caravan and trading, especially when that school includes a talking camel as one of its teachers.   Just a quick question - are Kahira and Yasmina both names that Zayd's wife uses? I got a little confused at the swapping between them.   Wonderful article. It sounds like such a nice place to learn and grow.

It makes me super happy you enjoyed visiting the school. I'll expand it a bit more once I'm allowed to. Regarding your question: I changed her name to Kahira which I thought to be more fitting while writing the article. Expect a change once I can edit again.
