Invasion and Resources Claim
This is a conflict for resources, especially for water. The Dragons of Draconia, refuse to share their water, and Dinoterra at first glance looks uninhabitable with no water. The other islands nearby have little water, as Dinoterra appears to be a rainshadow that diverts rain clouds away from its eastern side.
The Wyr scouts have been turned back at every turn when searching for water. So they can't discern coordinates, so they can jump in and get water before anyone notices.
A young queen dragon, the smartest of the Weyr dragons, decided to try a telepathic call. She organized all the dragons and riders and concentrated their message of need to anyone who could help. Finally, after hours of calling, someone answered. A high priestess of Aquatica, heard the plea, communed with Aquatica, and answered the call.
The Conflict
Prelude
The need for water was becoming intolerable, so some decided that they were going to poach some from Dracorus. Just as they were about to leave with their bounty, they were discovered, and they were captured. The fishermen and holders were disappointed that they wouldn't be bringing water to their families and stock.
Deployment
After the Weyr discovered the raid, they set out to bring them back and to try to bargain for access to water. The Dragons saw this as an intrusion, not a parley.
Battlefield
As soon as the Wing noticed that they were being attacked, they went between back to the Weyr. The Dragons were surprised at this, as they had never seen it before.
Conditions
The dragons and people are becoming dehydrated; the previously flowing water from below has drained away. Although a few of the cisterns survived, they are nearly empty, and it hasn't rained to let them collect more. They are learning to desalinate water from the sea, but it is a long and drawn-out process. The dragons are becoming desperate and ill from the lack of water.
The Engagement
The Weyr riders will defend themselves and those they guard, but would prefer not to attack other dragons. They were bred to fight Thread, not to kill other living beings. They told the dragons that we will not kill you, we only want to exist; it was not our choice to come here, and we don't know how to go home.
Outcome
The scouts were soon challenged by other dragons in the air, but dragons that were not the same. They didn't speak mind to mind, colors weren't the same. The scouts were forced down and interrogated. This was difficult as languages were different, so someone finally cast a spell so they could understand each other. The scouts were in shock, as they had never seen magic or dragons of such difference.
Aftermath
After Aquatica has claimed the Azure Island Chain as her territory and the Dragons have honored her wish, as they both fear and honor her. All who honor the Goddess Aquatica now know that she has claimed the island chain and its people as under her protection.
Historical Significance
Soon after the dimension shift, scouts from the Weyr were sent out to discover what had happened and find out where they were. Of course, it was discovered that they were no longer on Pern. When they discovered that the volcano was no longer connected to the core of the planet and that the water no longer flowed, they were worried. The air smelled different, even the ocean had a different composition; the shipfish complained about both. Even the light frequency was different, as there were now 2 suns and three moons, which also meant gravity, currents, and tides differed. The Azure Island Chain landed almost equidistant between Dinoterra, and Dracorus. Technically, in neither island's territory, but in contested waters. Many of the Dragons were annoyed that these incomers even existed, but others were intrigued by this new species that they saw as cousins.Legacy
Lyra appeared in the Wyr caldera bowl, glowing with energy. She was taller than live, exuding an Aura of Peace, appearing as an Avatar of Aquatica herself. She grew to tower over even the dragons. She pointed to where the depths of the volcano were before it moved to its new location. She connected it to its new planetary core, as well as connecting the water to the various channels deep below the ocean.
Technological Advancement
Renaissance age technology. Pern had a few heavy metals to mine, so they had to learn to make strong alloys and work with what they had. Some of their useful technology and skills are listed below:
- distilling, including both brewing and desalination
- woodworking: musical instruments, wagonmaking, barrelmaking, shipmaking, furniture, etc.
- stoneworking: all houses are made with stone because of the pernicious thread that will eat anything but metal and stone.
- leatherworking: anything and everything that can be made of leather.
- glassworking: windows, bottles, etc.
- brickmaking: bricks, pottery, ceramics, etc.
- limited technology based on steam, gas, lighting, forging, etc, again for the lack of needed metal ores.
- Flamethrowers, most were created and upkept from those handed down from their ancestors, the material scraped from their colony ship.
- limited biotechnology: bioluminescence, making of medicine, animal husbandry.
