Cloud Lynx Drake

Written by Pookas Kreations

This is a sentient, magical hybrid of feline grace and draconic power.  The Dragon Cat is a striking predator that rarely exceeds the size of a large mountain lion. Their hide is a unique composite of snow-white fur interspersed with iridescent, pearlescent scales that provide natural armor without sacrificing flexibility.

Basic Information

Anatomy

They look like a combination of a snow lynx and a dragon. Their body appears to be a lynx, with dragon-like wings and scales over most of its body.

Genetics and Reproduction

They can only breed with others of their kind; rarely will any offspring result from breeding with other cats or fae. Pureblood dragons will rarely talk to them, let alone court with one.   Cubs are liveborn, not from eggs. They shelter in their mother's pouch until large enough to leave, fledge, and learn to fly. Her pouch is a tiny pocket dimension, large enough to hold up to 4 cubs in a protected nest/playground. It stays warm, allows access to her milk, and any small animals she catches for their consumption.   It can take 2-4 months until they are large enough to fledge, wean, and leave the nest. It's all dependent on food availability, safety, and the mother's health.

Growth Rate & Stages

The cubs grow slowly, from diminutive to large; none have been seen as anything over large in size. It is always possible that they can exceed this.

Ecology and Habitats

They have only been seen living in the Upper Reaches of the Skylands, of cource they are very good at hiding.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Dragon cats are obligate carnivores, needing to eat 1/3 to 1/2 their body weight daily to keep up the energy to fly. It prefers to eat mammals and avians, but will eat any animal they can catch, except other sentients.

Behaviour

Some are known to hunt in family packs while the cubs are young, but most hunt in pairs or solitarily. They are very protective of their territory. If you encounter one, it is best to offer it a gesture of respect and travel on.

Additional Information

Social Structure

They live in small family groups; the father sometimes leaves after the cubs are weaned. Those newly mated with their first litter often stay together for longer than ones that have mated before. Some even have lifemate bonds, so they will always travel together.

Domestication

They can't be domesticated per se, but some have become friends with Sky Gnomes or Sky Dancers.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

They have been hunted for their pelts. For some reason, the hunters think the pelt will have magical qualities. Larger predators also prey on them.

Facial characteristics

Have a lynx-like creature but with draconic qualities.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

They have only been seen in the Skylands.

Average Intelligence

They have above-average intelligence, are cunning, sentient, and wise.

Gender Ideals

Many tribes are matriarchal, so the women rule; in other tribes, both sexes are equal. Breeding females are always honored.

Courtship Ideals

Males often fight or posture for a female's attention, but it is always her choice to accept. Even if she is forced, she can choose to accept or reject his seed.

Some mate for a season, every season, or for life. In some tribes, harems are possible for either sex.

Common Dress Code

Because of their body shape, they don't wear humanoid-style clothes; this clothing would survive the rigors of flight, either. They do commonly wear collars, harnesses, aprons, altered vests, arm or leg cuffs, and even various jewelry.   Clothing items are not worn to cover anything, but for decoration, ritual, or utility to carry items.

Common Taboos

  • The killing of another sentient.
  • Letting another die when you could help.

History

No one knows where they came from, whether it's from The Fae Wild, Plane of Air, Astral Plane, or a wild magic storm. Some think that it could also be the result of a wizard's magical or a scientist's genetic experiment.
