Apprentice Harper

Once accepted into the Harper Hall, a child's rank no longer applies. They are now only an apprentice harper and have to do whatever those above them say.

Qualifications

  • Learning all the required Ballads and learning songs, including the knowledge (history, and local) for all the nearby kingdoms, including the basics of their languages.
  • Basic Performance: mastering all the basic instruments (pipe, drum, harp, flute), basic singing techniques (perform skills). 
  • Dragondrum Code: these are used for messaging between islands, and need to learn the intricate rhythms and codes. This is a crucial skill (Linguistics).
  • Hall Duties: must be able to perform all chores and errands required of him in the Harper Hall with humility and obedience.
He is expected to perform complex, unassisted tasks (like delivering a short message via drum, singing a long ballad), and prove other skills competently.

Requirements

  • Able to follow directions and orders.
  • hold a pitch, good singing voice.
  • build and play an instrument.
  • ability to have a steady and legible handwriting for copying documents.

Appointment

Journeyman are constantly on the move, searching for likely to be competent harpers. Many are often younger sons or those who have few other helpful skills.

Responsibilities

Apprentices have many responsibilities that they are required to perform. 
  • upkeeping the grounds
  • cleaning the floors and walls in the hall
  • helping in the kitchen
  • helping with the laundry
  • making paper, parchment, cleaning and drying skins
  • polishing the dragondrums
  • carrying messages
  • and anything else the masters need.

Benefits

They don't receive any wages, but everything that is needed for your upkeep is provided to you. Lodgings, food, water, clothes. When traveling, if they are performing, room and board, often drinks (alcohol) are provided as well.

Accoutrements & Equipment

They are required to wear Harper Blue (turquoise or teal), at least a shirt or jacket, a hat, and a badge.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

Depending on the circumstances, if the offence is serious enough, their parents can be fined, or they can be sent back to their families and disgraced. Of course, something like murder is very serious; they will be imprisoned or killed themselves.
