Ibeadour
Ibeadour is one of the three superpowers of Phoebe with the most territories of any nation in the world. A coalition of several smaller nations united under one monarch, Ibeadour is also the most ethnically diverse of the superpowers.
History
Along the Karina Range of Edun laid a collection of countries in relative good relation following the founding of the Cartal and the start of the modern age. Jourdan had just changed leadership however with the D'oroy taking their places as the ruling class and Jordeinne Society turning sharply in the direction of imperialism and war. Naturally, these countries worried if Jourdan would make an attempt on the islands towards the centre of Edun.
It was during this time that Mina Lovepreet of Annell stepped forward - a young noblewoman from a small and inconsiquential family, Mina is noted with being particularly ambitious and patriotic. She started a group called the Sunlight Initiative which called that as Jourdan and even Avorene grew in power, no single country could stand against them. She has been cited with being the first person to bring forward the idea of joining the countries into a single powerful nation. The Sunlight Inititive gained traction rapidly within the various nations of the Karina range, finally ending with Mina putting forward what later become known as the Sunlight Demand.
The Sunlight Demand was simple: hand your governments and lands over to me, or face the wrath of my followers. At the time of the Sunlight Demand Mina had followers numbering in the hundreds of thousands, with some estimates putting them in the lower millions. As such, with the threat of Jourdan growing ever closer the demand was accepted. It is said that the Sunlight Demand was met with very little resistance - and even relief - from most countries, half of them part of the inititive, others hoping for a reprieve from the threat of the D'oroy.
As such, taking a letter from each the adopted nations, Ibeadour was born.
Demography and Population
Like the other three superpowers, Ibeadour is known for the forceful occupation of other nations by way of colonization. However, not all the territories under the Ibeadour flag were attained this way. With the rising threat of Jourdan, several smaller nations alligned under one person - the Ibeadour Monarchy - and formed the official Ibeadour kingdom. As such, Ibeadour is an extremely diverse nations with pockets of ethnic groups scattered across the continent. These diversities are celebrated within Ibeadour, and as such reflected in the general people.
While the Dourish lack the focused medical pursuit of Jourdan, as well as the driven military strength of Avorene, Ibeadour is regarded as a jack-of-all-trades country. The military is still formidable, the arts still take a front seat while science is rewarded. The quality of life is extremely high in the homeland, and while typically those that were occupied the Ibeadour have a rather low quality life, the life expectancy is surprisingly similar in both the homeland and the colonies. This is due to the Dorish investing more than the Jordeinne into the health of the indigenous peoples, as such hoping to improve relations and hopefully fully induct them as part of the empire.
Military
Despite Ibeadour's status as a melded country, Ibeadour itself occupies a very small island and as such, much of the nations army power exists elsewhere. The Queen's Navy however is a different matter - the source of Ibeadour's power much like their southern neighbour Jourdan. The reason both Ibeadour and Jourdan, in addition to the unofficial superpower the Nocluin Alliance, is the existence of their dominant navies.
The difference lies in that, unlike Jourdan who relies entirely on their dominant naval power, Ibeadour combines their marginally less impressive fleets with the man power of their colony standing armies, which both help them maintain control over the region and provide alternative opportunities for the people they've colonized.
As it stands, there are six overall sections to the Dourish Military:
The Royal Guard
- The Royal Guard is responsible for the protection of the Lovepreet royal family and their assets as the royal family of Ibeadour. The members of this division are required to have served at least five years with an exemplary service record, in addition to two recommendations from officers already within the guard.
- The Royal Garrison is comprised of those dedicated to protecting the homeland and the people of Ibeadour. They are responsible with the protection of the homeland, in addition to serving the people as a general police force.
- The Royal Scouts are those tasked with the job of exploration and reconissaince of Dourish interest. These are the adventurers and spies tasked with both protecting and expanding Royal assets.
- The People's Army is what remains of the previous military forces of each individual country before they collectively became Ibeadour. These forces are charged with maintaining diplomatic relations between the nobility while protecting their various noble houses. The people's Army is also tasked with the maintenance and protection of Parliament - they are also the predominant force seen overseas protecting Dourish diplomats.
- This is the largest division of the Dourish army, charged with being their overall navy. These are the various fleets and flotilla's charged with monitoring Ibeadour seas and pushing with militant force. They are the spear of the Dourish military, the first line of defence and the vanguard.
- Whereas the Royal Navy is the spear, the Grand Fleet is the shield. The shining jewel of the Dourish Navy, the Grand Fleet is charged with the at-sea protection of the mainland Ibeadour, made up of only the most decorated soldiers and the best ships. The Grand Fleet is the last line of defence before the sea meets land, and as such they are often hailed as the best the Dourish have to offer. They are also charged with carrying out various specialized missions in the name of the queen. The sight of a Grand Fleet ship often heralds war.
Foreign Relations
Ibeadour works hard as a nation to maintain relations with most other countries in Phoebe, though as a superpower most other countries maintain a relative distance in the hopes not to incur their wrath. As such, Ibeadour has stressed relations with the other two superpowers, and due to their past the Nocluin Alliance relations are shaky at best. Avorene is a simple case however as they simply keep to themselves, though Jourdan is a whole other problem.
Ibeadour and Jourdan have been at odds over naval supremacy for centuries, and it shows in their diplomatic attitudes. While both maintain a polite distance in their day to day, it is common knowledge the two superpowers have been on the brink of all out war for almost their entire existences. If Jourdan and Ibeadour were to go to war, it would undoubtedly draw in their occupied territories, often different territories occupying the same country which would cause brother to fight brother, child against parent. It is also an undeniable fact that if the two were to go to war, the Nocluin Alliance would no doubt try to capitalize on it, though in what way and how it would affect the rest of the world is unknown.
Greatest of all the unknowns that would encompass war between Ibeadour and Jourdan is the reaction of the last superpower, Avorene. Many think that if the two went to war, Avorene would have no choice but to follow. Then again, many argue that the reaction of the isolatinist Avoren's is an unknowable best left that way. As it is, most other nations are dedicated to maintaining the thin peace between the two, as backed by the ///Cartal.
Infrastructure
Ibeadour is the pinnacle of advanced infrastructure; a paragon of the capabilities of well managed civil engineering. The crowning achievement of Ibeadour is its engineered 'mainland' the likes of which doesn't exist anywhere else on Phoebe.
Following the unification of the original nations under the Dourish empire, the first queen Mina Lovepreet started construction on what is to date the greatest feat of engineering Phoebe has ever seen - the Indra Archipelago. Named for her daughter, the Indra Archipelago is a series of artificially made platforms that connect the various original nations and change the main islands of Ibeadour into a singular landmass connected with these interlocking platforms.
The civil engineering of Ibeadour is also extremely well managed, often called the cleanest country in the world, though this is often in conjunction to the same claim made by the Jordeinne. A key distinction between the two however is that the colonies under Jordeinne rule often receive most of the county's waste whereas Dourish colonies receive similar treatment to the homeland in regards to waste and infrastructure.
