Introductory Overview: An Adventurer Lance is the standard operational unit for registered professionals in the field. The formation of a Lance, as opposed to an informal "party," is designed to maximize operational versatility, survivability, and mission efficiency through synergistic role-based composition. These structures are modular and scale according to the threat level and logistical scope of the assigned task, ensuring that Adventurer assets can be deployed effectively against a wide range of challenges facing modern civilization.

//>_ Hacker_Override_Initiated... Karckess on 'Lances'. //>_ 'Lance' is just ASOB-speak for a crew of adventurers. It's all about making sure you've got someone to watch your back, someone to hit the tag, someone to patch you up, and someone to shoot from a distance. Sounds good on paper, anyway.
Composition
Manpower
Equipment
The required equipment for any Lance is highly dependent on the specific mission parameters. While personal weapons and armor are standard requirements, specialized operations necessitate additional kits. For example, a crypt delve may require enhanced light sources, trap-disarming tools, and measures to counter the Restless Dead. Wilderness expeditions require extensive survival gear, from shelter and rations to campsite protection and resource collection tools.
//>_ Hacker_Override_Initiated... //>_ What the manual doesn't highlight is the mountain of clat all that 'required' gear costs. Good equipment ain't cheap, and cheap equipment gets you dead.
Weaponry
Lances utilize a wide array of weaponry determined by member proficiencies. This includes both arcane and kinetic firearms, and diverse melee weapons from mundane blades to advanced Mystech implements and weaponized cybernetics. Combat-capable animal companions or magically bound familiars are also utilized. Larger Lance formations (Raid, Expedition) can deploy with artillery, siege equipment, and armed assault vehicles. This is supplemented by the vast range of spells available to Mage and Manifold class adventurers.
Vehicles
Vehicle use is dictated by a Lance's finances, affiliations, and mission requirements. Lances may rent or purchase specialized vehicles, such as sea vessels for deep-sea excavation or aircraft for reaching skylands and engaging aerial threats. Expedition Lances are typically comprised of vehicle caravans or a single, large, self-sufficient mobile base.
Structure
The command structure scales with the size of the Lance:
- Quest Lance (3-9 members): May operate as a cohesive team with a single chosen leader (Lancer).
- Delve Lance (9-20 members): Led by a designated Delve Lancer who delegates to 2-4 Quest Lancers.
- Raid Lance (20-50 members): Commanded by a Raid Lancer with 2-5 Delve Lancers leading their own subdivisions.
- Expedition Lance (50-200 members): Led by a Commander Lancer, delegating through a multi-tiered structure of Raid and Delve Lancers.
Tactics
Tactical approaches vary based on Lance size, composition, and experience. For larger formations (Raid Lances and above), a common doctrine known as Raid Tactics is employed. This involves segregating the formation into specialist Lances based on role (Shields, Sabers, Supports, Slingers). These specialist units then act as cohesive, synergistic groups on the battlefield—Shields form the vanguard, Slingers provide ranged support, Sabers act as mobile strike forces, and Support teams are assigned to aid specific units as needed.
//>_ Hacker_Override_Initiated... //>_ A Lancer's real job is making a plan work with what they've got, which is rarely what the book says they should have. And those fancy 'Raid Tactics'? Looks great on a datapad, but in the field, it's a communications nightmare. You're throwing together crews who don't know each other. If the Lancers aren't in perfect sync, the whole thing falls apart into a butcher-fest where everyone's tripping over each other.
Training
Standard operational doctrine suggests that Quest and Delve Lances be composed of members within the same rank tier (e.g., all Journeyman-tier). Larger formations like Raid and Expedition Lances typically enforce a minimum base rank for all participants, ensuring a high standard of capability for large-scale operations.
Logistics
Logistical Support
Lances of sufficient rank or with appropriate political connections can request behind-the-scenes logistical support from the ASOB for complex missions.
//>_ Hacker_Override_Initiated... //>_ For a price, of course. Don't think ASOB is doing you any favors for free.
Auxilia
A Lance may request tactical support from external entities, including other Lances, local law enforcement, specialist groups (trackers, Mystechnicians, Arcanists), rescue teams, or even national military assets.
//>_ Hacker_Override_Initiated... //>_ 'Request' is a strong word. This only works if your Lance has the reputation or the creds to make that call. You can't just therra the army for backup because you poked a big monster.
Upkeep
The maintenance of gear, vehicles, and living expenses is the responsibility of each Lance. The ASOB offers services and supplies to assist with these needs.
//>_ Hacker_Override_Initiated... //>_ 'Assist' means 'sell you stuff.' Often for a price that keeps you needing to take the next job. It's a cycle.
Recruitment
Lances are autonomous in their recruitment processes and are individually responsible for acquiring and vetting their own members.
//>_ Hacker_Override_Initiated... //>_ Just 'cause they call themselves a 'Lance' doesn't make 'em pros. A bad crew is just a pack of trogs waiting to happen, and they don't just fail quests – they make bigger messes for everyone else to clean up.
