Raven Dragoon Wing
Officially a referred to as cavalry, the Raven Dragoons are in reality mounted infantry as they dismount to fight. Armed with a musket or musketoon, dragoons are a highly mobile fighting force able to strike unexpectedly from the flanks or rear of an enemy's position.
Composition
Manpower
A typical dragoon wing consists of on average 20 to 25 Knights of the Raven, though some Chapterhouses field as few as 10 Knights in a wing.
Occasionally, dragoon wings will allow a few of the Order's Squires to tag along as spotters, lookouts, fire support, or for live training. This is mostly restricted to already well drilled Squires, due to the danger involved in real combat.
Equipment
For ease of mobility and to reduce weight while mounted, knights in a dragoon are only armoured in a cuirass and helmet. They carry a full day's worth of rations and two days of water in the event the knights become separated from their camp and command for more than a day.
Weaponry
Each knight is equipped with two firearms and a sabre. One of these firearms is a musketoon, a shorter barreled musket designed for easier portability while mounted. The other is a long barreled pistol, suitable for firing from horseback. Both firearms use the same ammunition for speed and convenience. Lead shot and powder charges are stored in their own oiled leather or canvas pouches, with a nominal capacity of approximately 150 shots.
Vehicles
Each knight in a dragoon wing has their own mount, most of which will be light warhorses bred for speed and endurance. Some knights prefer to ride equecorae, but this is limited by rank and availability.
Tactics
Dragoon wings are primarily intended to fill a supporting fire role. They are a highly maneuverable force for striking from the flanks and rear of an enemy, never staying in a single position long enough for an effective counterattack to be mounted against them.
Training
Dragoon knights are expected to be experienced riders trained in hit-and-run tactics, and to be well drilled in loading and firing their musketoons and pistols.
