Eld
An Eld is a leader of a small settlement or small city district, they are not nobles however in most cases they hold the most power in that settlement. They act as the voice for their community often settling internal disputes, organising defences, setting up trade routes, teaching the young, and are usually the wise man or woman of the community with many asking them for advice and guidance. Being an Eld is not a paid position so many rely on the income of their family but most communities will each put away a small tithe of their income to help support their Eld.
Elds are typically high ranking ex-military and the role of Eld – while not heredity – is usually passed down a family with the current Eld educating who ever they deem a suitable replacement with the appeal of the community. Even if a noble is present like a Knight or Baron the Eld still represents the people and they will work together to run the settlement. With the Eld often bringing forth the communities concerns and queries so the noble can help act upon them. In cases like this the Eld will act as an assistant to the Noble known as a lord or lady – who are classed as nobility.
