This is a stub. You can help Andalusada by yelling at me to expand it.The Imperial Union of England and Scotland - most commonly called England-Scotland - is a world-spanning empire, and one of the global powers of Andalusada. Possibly two of them. (The traditional joke calls it "an empire and a half"; it's no longer punishable but you'll still get arrested for telling it.) The collapse of Umayyad Seville left England-Scotland, along with France and Russia, essentially unchallenged in Europe.
History
Scotland (at the time Scotland-Norway) was an active participant in the Age of Exploration, spending a fortune looking for the Northwest Passage and making a fortune on New World lumber and beaver pelts.- The Marriage of '43: The marriage of the English and Scottish royal families took place in 1743, and marked a decisive turning point in the Nine Years' War by turning most of the world against France. France won the peace, however, by ceding most of its mainland territories to Seville, breaking the historic Anglo-Moorish Alliance.
- The Trenowden Affair: As was typical, Scotland entered the Anglo-Moorish War as an English ally. Matters came to a head in 1867 when it was revealed that Paul Trenowden, an Englishman in Scottish diplomatic service, had opened secret peace negotations with the UCNA. While this was discovered before anything concrete had been agreed to, Trenowden was hanged, drawn and quartered for treason at the war's end.
Organization and Assets
Unlike the other great powers, the Imperial Union controls almost no territory itself. (Thus, although on the world stage they act as a single nation, England and Scotland are always given separate colors on the map.)- "Athanasius contra mundum": Since 1869, the cornerstone of the Imperial Union has been a strict unified foreign policy.
- An Imperial Military: Because England-Scotland must be united in peace, they must also be united in war. Thus, the two kingdoms share a single army and navy between them, with a unified chain of command and a common military budget.
While the military is functionally united, regimental origins are observed strictly and taken seriously. This is because each kingdom is expected to keep its own house in order; calling upon the other's soldiers for anything short of external war is a declaration of crisis, and often a career-ending - Some degreee of economic integration: Much like the CRC, England and Scotland have formed a customs union with each other, sharing an external trade and competition policy. In particular, plans for a unified Imperial Mint have always fallen through, although both England and Scotland have standardized on weight and purity and their currency thus has the same intrinsic value. (More recent reforms have pushed for standard coin sizes.)
