Dhargorum

"A once proud city, once proud hall,
thought too proud to ever fall.
House of Lords, Seat of Kings,
keepers of forbidden things.
The finest craftsmen, smiths,
givers of the greatest gifts.
Who would wish them harm?
Who would wish them harm?"
~Ancient Dwarven Poem

Districts

The ancient city of Dhargorum is one of the most extensive Dwarven ruins in Ancaepya. As the capital of the Frothgirr kingdom, it contains everything a Dwarven regional center of power needs.
Accounts of expeditions into the ruins and old Dwarven texts show that the city was split into two halves, the residential and the industrial. It was also surrounded by mines and different farms which grow specific plants and fungi that can be grown underground. The city's industrial district contains miles of tunnels interspersed with mineshafts, foundries, forges, underground rivers, mills, and small fortresses to house the kingdom's military.
No expedition has ever reached the residential part of the city since the city was ruined and abandoned but ancient Dwarven texts paint a wonderful picture of it. It is said to be located in a massive underground cavern, expanded by Dwarven builders and supported by massive pillars inside which families of labourers used to live. Most of the city is located on the cavern floor, but stairs and lifts hug the outside walls of the cavern, leading to houses and shops hewn from rock and carved into the walls. The Palace of the great Frothgirr Kings hangs suspended from the very ceiling of the cavern, only reachable by a system of pulleys from the bottom, and bridges connected to the great pillars.
In recent years the Goblin city of Krennarrahk has sprung into existence in the industrial outskirts of the Dwarven ruins. Krennarrahk is the centre of an underground Kingdom ruled by the Goblins. Other Goblin clans as well as tribes of Trolls have also established themselves in the maze of caverns, caves, and tunnels, which the Dwarves used to rule.

History

The city of Dhargorum first appears in the historical record sometime around the year 3200 BD. It is mentioned as a large mining settlement and the seat of Clan Frothgirr. In around 3700 BD the Frothgirrs became kings of the Golden Hills. At this point, the hills and mountains of the Northern Island belonged solely to the Dwarves and being the ruling family of the Golden Hills, the Frothgirrs were arguably the most important Dwarven Clan. The family served a Gold Dragon named Pavandrex Suntooth, often considered the richest dragon in history. He was a fervent servant of Astilabor, but largely non-violent. Pavandrex preferred increasing his horde through the use of his servants, and the Frothgirrs provided him with plenty of gold and silver.
The city thrived, as did Clan Frothgirr, until its abandonment around the year 0. No one knows quite why, as the Dwarven myths are quite contradictory. One prominent explanation is that when Pavandrex left with the rest of the dragons, the Frothgirrs remained loyal and followed him wherever he went, as Dwarven tradition states the dragons left to fight a great evil and the Clan Frothgirr would not let their master face it alone, however it is hard to believe every civilian would also go into battle thus. Another myth speaks of a great evil coming to the city itself, destroying it, or causing the population to evacuate but nothing specific is mentioned.
Whatever may be the case, the city was lost. In the early years after the dragons had left, adventuring parties and looters apparently made their way into the industrial outskirts and the mines surrounding the city, with some journals surviving recounting the journey having survived to this day. However, with no one having set eyes on the city proper and the fabled grand cavern in which it is supposed to lie, many historians debate its very existence, dismissing it as a fabrication of the Dwarven lore-keepers.
The first to reach the very centre of the ancient city after its collapse was a group of adventurers led by Dolmir. They were looking for the Hammer of Thromneal and discovered the real cause of the Dwarves' demise. It was a fungal plague, which had turned the inhabitants into undead slaves of the fungi. The Dragon Pavandrex had also been infected and turned into a fungus monster.
