Air Dragon

Dragons with Air Elemental Magic

Basic Information

Anatomy

Air dragons have the same basic body plan as all dragons with four legs and two wings. They have a very large wingspan and a long tail in comparison to their bodies. They are much smaller that other sub-species of dragon. They narrow heads with long, pointed snouts.

Biological Traits

Air dragons are well adapted for a life mostly spent in the air. They have large wings, small and narrow bodies and long tails. They have very little body fat and have very lean muscles. They are the smallest sub-species of dragon. Air dragons have the ability to manipulate air and lightning due to their innate air elemental magic abilities.

Genetics and Reproduction

Air dragons lay between one and three eggs, depending on the size of the female. The eggs typically take around three to four months to hatch. Eggs are laid in the spring and hatc just before the end of summer as the temperature in the mountains where they live is too cold during autumn and winter. Females lay their eggs in nests built from branches, leaves and long grass.

Growth Rate & Stages

Air dragons are considered hatchlings until they are able to sustain flight at the age of roughly one or two. Once sustained flight is achieved they are younglings until they have achieved their adult size at around ten years. Dragons will continue to grow until the age of fifty but in air dragons this continued growth is vastly slowed down compared to other dragon species. This means most fully grown dragons aren't much bigger than young adult air dragons.

Ecology and Habitats

Air dragons thrive in the mountains of Gaenel due to their height. This makes it easy for them to reach the heights needed for hunting their prey. They tend to perfer sheer cliffs and hard to reach caves rather than open mountainside and valleys.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Air dragons will hunt any large animal that roams the mountains. They have also been known to grab birds out of the sky mid flight. To hunt, air dragons will fly high above the ground, looking for prey. When their target has been spotted, they dive at the ground and either pick their prey up to be taken elsewhere or slam it into the ground with their hind legs, crushing the animal. The second method is usually only applied when the prey is too heavey for the dragon to carry, usually done by younger, smaller dragons.

Biological Cycle

During the winter, most air dragons will seek caves to hibernate in. Large groups of dragons can be found in vast cave networks during this time. They do this for two reasons, large enough caves are hard to come by and it helps to keep them warm as there can be as many as one hundred dragons in the largest cave systems, all sharing body heat. Some dragons will fly over the mountains to warmer areas but most still find it too cold so remain in the mountains to hibernate.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Air dragons have a very loose sense of society. They pass knowledge of their ancestors down to younglings and other young dragons and they will tell stories of the past but they lack anything to bind them together in a big enough way to form any sort of community except during hibernation where they will often work together to make sure everyone survives the winter.

Domestication

Unbonded dragons will often consider bonded dragons "domesticated", despite the fact that the bonded dragons act no differently than they would than if they were unbonded.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Air dragons are a key part of the Jaepól Mínakú.

Facial characteristics

Air dragons have narrow heads and long, pointed snouts for increased aerodynamics. Their eyes are more forward facing than other sub-species. They have two horns from the top of their head, curving down and back toward their neck, almost appearing parallel to the curve of their skull. Their eyes are typically a dull shade of yellow or gold.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Air dragons are exclusively found in the mountains of Gaenel.

Average Intelligence

Air dragons are highly intelligent creatures, comparable to most humans. Hatchlings have a mental capacity similar to small children while younglings are comparable to young adults. Older dragons possess intelegence beyond even the best human scholars.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Air dragons have the best eyesight out of all species in Órlekanú. Their sense of smell is excellent. However, their hearing is perhaps the poorest out of the dragon sub-species. Like all dragons, air dragons have the ability to sense other living beings with their minds due to their natural telepathic magic.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Unbonded wild dragons don't have typical names. Instead, they are reffered to by a description, usually of their most notable traits. Unlike a name, these descriptions vary over time and can be different for each individual. Bonded dragons are named by the human they bonded to. Dragons are typicaly named after great dragons from history or a traditional name in Gaervar. Some dragons are named after humans or descriptions in Gaervar, similar to wild dragon "names" except these names are permanent.

Major Organizations

Bonded air dragons are usually part of the @Jaepól Mínakú. All air dragons live withing the boarders of Gaenel but don't typically interact with humans unless they are bonded.

Common Myths and Legends

Air dragons all believe they are formed from the lightning and wind of @Japo.
Genetic Ancestor(s)
Lifespan
120-150 Years
Average Height
2.8 meters
Average Length
8.2 meters (from nose to tail tip)
Average Physique
Small, lean muscle, large wingspan for body size.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Air dragons have very pale purple scales. The colouring of the underside, wing membranes, horns and talons is usually pale yellow but can sometimes be almost white. The pale colours help the dragons to blend in with the sky at high altitudes above the ground. As a dragon ages, it will usually develop patches on the purple scales that turn the same colour as their underside/wing membrane to further help them camoflauge with the sky as they get bigger.
Wingspan: 5.7 - 6.1 meters from wing-tip to wing-tip
