Temple of the Fury

Purpose / Function

At the western edge of The Silver Peaks, high up on the mountain slopes, lies a temple dedicated to Mirena, the Goddess of Power. While worship of the Fury isn't outlawed in Avalyra, those who journey to the Temple are typically those who feel constrained or judged by society. Many of these individuals openly consort with demons, viewing these creatures as divine creations of their goddess. Due to these practices, there are many tieflings among the worshippers and acolytes at the Temple of the Fury.

Architecture

The Temple consists of a long, wide staircase carved into the mountainside, leading to a complex of stone buildings arrayed over a plateau higher up. The largest main building stands tall in the centre of the plateau and houses the majority of the dormitories, with the focal worship area occupying the ground floor. A large ampitheatre stands to one side of the complex, overlooking a sandy area covered in old bloodstains. Watchtowers dot the outer edge of the complex, allowing no approach without being spotted.

History

The temple was founded shortly after the establishment of the kingdoms, in year 36, by a secretive sect of Mirena worshippers. Feeling unwelcomed by the followers of other gods, they settled outside the borders and built the grand temple over a period of years. Acolytes from the Temple eventually began occasional pilgrimages into the kingdoms, in search of others who may feel as they do. This has allowed their ranks to grow over the centuries, and the group has become widely known to religious scholars, particularly across Avalyra. Several noted historical figures have been known or rumoured to have studied at the temple. Perhaps most notably, Merene Tocuria is open about the fact she was born and raised in the temple, and is a devout holy warrior of the Burning Lady.
