Nevarri
The humans which populate the northwestern quadrant of Amastris are commonly referred to as the Nevarri. Similarly to the Crowner Nevarri is more a culture than a direct ethnicity however the majority are human and are distinguishable by their darker hair, olive skin-tone, and propensity towards magic. They are also well liked, as they are the friendliest and most approachable of the humans. Unlike the arrogant Radians, the reclusive Crowners or the abrasive Therans.
Naming Traditions
Family names
Names are formally broken down into three groups: Clan name, first name, last name.
While clan names are more a formality than anything else, in more rural areas they can be fiercely defended.
For example, the name Hostus Cadicius Marcallas is broken down into Hostus (Clan) Cadicius (First Name) Marcallas (Last Name)
Women rarely retain their clan names when marrying.
Culture
Major language groups and dialects
The old Nevarri language is a foundational language which was surprisingly unaffected by elven or dwarven influence. The language was used as a building block for the Common language. While common is more derived from Old Radian and Theran languages, it is no surprise that scientific or scholarly words come almost exclusively from Nevarri.
Culture and cultural heritage
The Nevarri are an old people despite being a newer nation. The proto-Nevarran kingdoms were not politically unified by any stretch of the term for centuries. They shared the same language, customs, and gods as each other. They settled the lands after driving off the Orcs and Half-Orcs hordes and have deep ties to both the Elf; Elvhen and Dwarf people. These ties of fraternity have evolved into a culture which favours egalitarianism, political representation, and relative freedom among sapients and nations.
However, the truth is made of sterner stuff. Yes, they are egalitarian yet only men have political power. Indeed, political representation is a cornerstone, still the plebians have few avenues to advocate for themselves. As for freedom? Indeed, Elves, Dwarves, and Humans are politically privileged but a history of slavery and persecution denies these luxuries to the
Orcs and Half-Orcs, Halfling, Gnome, or other sapients.
With regards to the topic of magic, the Nevarri are among the most proficient casters in the world. While perhaps not as innately gifted as the Gnomes, Nevarri are able casters if given the means and time to perfect their craft. Due to their propensity towards magic, arcane proficiency is towards one of the greatest forms to master. Very few in political leadership are not casters of some variety. Indeed it has been argued, by outsiders that the Pax Nevarrum is in fact a magocracy.
Shared customary codes and values
The Nevarri believe in the idea of mastery more than anything. A philosophical understanding that there is little in the world that cannot be understood, conquered, or at the very least known. This can manifest in numerous ways though the most common way is generally through study and self discipline. Nevarri are avid learners and scholars whether it be in the magical, scholarly, or martial. Sometimes these cultural values take on a darker aspect and instead of self-examination, the desire for mastery manifests as cruel subjugation or tyranny. Indeed it was upon this dark horse which the Nevarri rode to conquer the Orcs and Half-Orcs and make slaves of them for centuries.
Art & Architecture
When possible, white marble is the preferred building material for large buildings. Though brick, is considered acceptable in less affluent towns and neighbourhoods. Nevarri enjoy building with columns, open space, and oratory areas in mind. Due to their propensity with magic, these buildings can be grandiose indeed. Amphitheatres, coliseums, and hippodromes are common even in smaller towns as these are some of the most treasured pastimes of the people of the pax.
Ideals
Beauty Ideals
The height of beauty for the Nevarri is mastery of form. Whether that be in physique, magic, fashion, or otherwise. So long as an individual shows the proficiency to display themselves well, Nevarri will not hold physical characteristics against anyone. Remarkably, this includes physical deformity or disability.
Gender Ideals
While outwardly egalitarian, in truth only males work outside the home and are breadwinners. Women are expected to be homemakers with the exception of certain jobs. The witches of The Morrigana are among some the few opportunities for women to work outside the home. Witches in the past have been employed as investigators, researchers, scientists, and healers to name just a few examples.
