Indrid Cold

The Grinning Man, He Who Smiles, Master Mirror, Evil Incarnate

You find yourself stumbling back home from the tavern late at night. The air is chillier than it should be for a late summer night. You see ahead of you the crossroads of the village: the trail to the woods on your left and the trail home on the right, with sunflowers in the middle. A man is leaning casually on the fence in front of the sunflowers. The moonlight is strong tonight, so you can see the man's clean shaven face and shaved head as he smiles at you. He beckons you over. Claiming to be a travelling merchant, he is looking for lodgings for the night. Your words are a little slurred and your vision is blurry. Is it the ale? No...you were alright a moment ago. Why do you feel so heavy? Why is the grin on the man's face getting wider? Why is he leaning closer? Those teeth are too long. No...please no.

Personal history

Little is known of Indrid Cold. Generally, the few scholars and theologians who even know of him believe he is an urban legend or folklore. The even fewer folk who know the truth are either dead or mad.   The first instance of Indrid Cold was recorded in -148 AN in a prePax Nevarrum settlement outside of Ravetorum. The tale goes, that a common villager was disappointed with his lot in life and was approached by a grinning man who made the villager wealthy and powerful so that he could be happy. The villager—now a duke—could never stop smiling. The duke decided to spread his joy to the world and travelled south to the taciturn dwarves. In a completely unrelated series of events, the first recorded victims of Blight appeared in southern dwarven villages in -150AN.   Indrid Cold is said to appear when kingdoms become large and populous—but never in capitals. Yet, only after appearing in small villages or settlements does doom—both personal and portentous—soon follow.

This entity is known to be exceedingly polite and mild-mannered, never raising his voice or displaying outward anger, even when offended. The exception to this is when he is interrupted by someone uninvolved in conversation. If this were to happen, Indrid Cold may kill the offender in a terrifyingly calm manner.
