Chatillian Shadow Forest
Overview:
The Chatillian Shadow Forest, also known locally as the Kray Lesa, is a vast and mysterious woodland in northern Chernaya, stretching nearly 400 miles from Highmount to the ridge of mountains that surrounds much of The Reach's southern shores. This ancient forest is known to frequently be deadly for travelers. In the time of Belgarion it is still technically outside of Chernaya's boundaries, following the disasterous attempt to carve roads into it known as Vladikaar's Folly. It is thought to be a place where the veil is particularly thin. The Western Road is avoided by many for this very reason.
Significance:
- Rumored Second Home of the Chatillian Feyn: The Kray Lesa is rumored to harbor a significant population of the Chatil. Very little is known about them by all save the most learned and the most crackpot, and the two accounts can be hard to distinguish from one another.
- Sanctuary for the Karlu-Chatil: The Kray Lesa also serves as a refuge for the Karlu-Chatil, half-blood descendants of Feyn and humans. Many of these individuals fled their homes in Chernaya to escape persecution, whether from the Inquisitors, the brutal conditions of the mines, or local witch hunts fueled by fear and hatred of "Changelings." Within the shadowy depths of the forest, these outcasts have formed hidden communities, living in relative safety away from the prying eyes of the Crown and its agents.
