Beren the Bald

From "The Free City Chronicle", a Rostovan publication:   Born in the Midlands, his youth darkened by the pyre’s glow, he saw his mother perish, branded a witch by the King’s Inquisitors. Beren himself, spared by fate’s grim hand, found little mercy, becoming a servant of the very Witch-Hunters who had condemned her. Trained to wield the Crown’s iron will, he carved a fearsome name, his shorn head and mismatched eyes haunting the guilty and innocent alike.   But then, in a turn most unexpected, Beren forsook his masters and rose anew within The Regiment, commanding with ferocious skill in the The Wars of Subjugation. His men, it is said, hold him in fierce devotion, yet dark rumors follow still: whispers of atrocities committed in war, stains that honor cannot cleanse. Now, as the King himself names him “Beren the Betrayer” and sends a mighty host to Skalliheim, the nation holds its breath.   What can the Free Folk make of this man? Does he defy the Crown for justice or merely for his own ends? All eyes turn to Skalliheim, where the riddle of Beren’s heart shall at last be solved.
