Magic of the Ygdril
Since time immemorable, the power of the Ygdril, the immense tree standing at the apex of the world, has been vital to sustaining life all thorughout Altera. This is the invisible, yet powerful, force that the inhabitants of Altera would refer to as Magic, a power that would give rise to Rootcallers (mages) who could call upon it at will to accomplish wonders, that would manifest many strange phenomena throughout the world, and eventually become the lifeblood of the various technologies that have taken the world by storm. Since The Fracturing, this power has only become more vital to the preservation of life, as well as more prevalent throughout the world, particularly as the source of power for its greatest defenders, the Rootwardens.
Manifestation
Magic is normally invisible to the naked eye, though large enough concentrations of it in a given area can result in various visible phenomena, with the most common being an aurora in the region (the area around the Ygdril itself has a permanent, extremely bright aurora across the sky that can be seen from northern Fjelka and Rangva). Other natural phenomena tied to magic include seas that never run dry despite constantly cascading over ledges into the abyss, microclimates completely unlike anything that should naturally occour in the area (particularly in areas around a Lesser Ygdril), and anomalies such as altered gravity, just to name a few.
Beyond these anomalies, magic is also known to the people of Altera as the origin of Amber. Formed from the sap of the Ygdril itself, Amber is often referred to as "solid magic", and is capable of manifesting many of the above anomalies if gathered in one place in large enough quantities, depending on the type of magic it's aspected to. With the advancement of civilisation, a thriving industry of mining Amber has arisen, increasing itts spread throughout the wider world.
Localization
While Magic exists throughout the world, it's most strongly felt in the presence of the Ygdril and its roots, and its power diminishes the further one ventures from the the Ygdril. The areas surrounding the Lesser Ygdrils (smaller offshoots of the Ygdril found throughout the world) are noted for being especially saturated in magic, often resulting in the development of unique weather and climate conditions in the immediate area, often contradictory to the natural climate.
