Unicorn

Aside from dragons, unicorns are some of the most infamous denizens of Altairus. All unicorn species are of the genus Monoceros.

Despite their association with the Seelie elements, unicorns can be of any element. Contrary to popular perceptions of unicorns, unicorns in Altairus are more caprine or cervidine in appearance than equine. Their faces and split hooves resemble that of a goat or deer, and they possess long, leonine tails. The horn in the center of their head can take many forms; while it is typically in the shape of a narwhal tusk, different unicorn species will have different horns. The horns of rhinoceri, stags, or even insects have been reported to grow on various unicorn species.

Like dragons, unicorns are magnificient but unpredictable. Males in particular tend to be quite aggressive and territorial. Their favorite method of attack is to charge at a potential threat, spearing it with their horn. Care should be taken when traversing unicorn territory, especially during breeding season.

Unicorns possess a unique power over healing magic that few other beings have, but they can also destroy the world around them with the curses they cast. If approaching a unicorn, it is recommended that one exhibits a humble, respectful demeanor and does not make any sudden movements. If successful, you may even be able to get a unicorn to eat out of your hand!

Pegacorns

Pegacorns are hybrids of unicorns and pegasi. These magical beasts possess the wings and flight abilities of pegasi, but the horns of unicorns. As magnificent as these beings are, they are very uncommon. Unions between pegasi and unicorns are rare, and their offspring are infertile. Because of this, it is considered a sign of incredibly good fortune and happiness coming your way if you see a pegacorn. They are given ample respect and a wide berth by most, especially considering that their unique magical signature effectively makes them into walking Wendigo wards.

Significance on the Altairian Sigil

On the Altairus Sigil, the white unicorn (Fatamoph) flanks the left side of the Anima Sigil. He represents the Seelie elements of Anima; Air, Fire, and Light. As such, he is positioned on the left side of the sigil.

The unicorn is also associated with the seasons of spring and summer. This is because wild unicorns typically shed their horns during the winter, growing them back as the weather warms. Fatamoph the father unicorn is said to shed his horn at the Winter Solstice, growing it back fully by the time the Summer Solstice rolls around.
