Lümamoph's Sacrifice
Story
In the beginning, two wise beasts ruled over the land of Altairus. Fatamoph, the argent unicorn, took charge of the daytime, while Mutamoph, the sable dragon, ruled over the night. As it was, all was well in our world.
Over centuries and millennia, however, the once Golden Era tarnished to a Silver one. The Heart of Altairus, creator as it was, had grown lazy. No longer were Altairus's denizens safe from the nefarious schemes of the wendigoes, malicious void-beings who only live to drain the magical essence from our world. Slowly, our once-perfect world began to suffer.
One fateful year, after Mutamoph laid her egg, she noticed something strange. The world was growing colder. The nights growing longer. She ran to tell Fatamoph the news.
The two quickly realized what was happening. The sun was disappearing. By the end of the year, Altairus would be nothing more than a lifeless ball of ice.
As the world began to die, Fatamoph grew weaker. Eventually, he lost his horn, unable to work his magic anymore. In his absence, Mutamoph took responsibility over Altairus, all while tending to her mate and egg. Despite everything, her egg was healthy, and growing bigger each day.
Eventually, there came a day when the sun would not come at all. It seemed like all hope was lost. But just then, Mutamoph's egg hatched. Out of it came something new; a brilliant golden dragon with a unicorn horn atop his head. This was Lümamoph, the beast of light.
Immediately, Lümamoph took to the skies. He flew farther and farther away until he was but a speck in the infinite cosmos. When he got to where he was going, he ignited his horn. As he channeled, the sun reemerged as a brilliant orb of light, turning the endless night to a brand new day.
When Mutamoph and Fatamoph looked into the steadily rising sun, they could see something else next to it. A star. In restoring the sun, Lümamoph had transformed himself into a star in the sky, eternally circling around the sun.
Slowly, life returned to Altairus. The flowers and the birds returned, and even Fatamoph's horn grew back. Mutamoph was able to step down from ruling Altairus as her mate's power was restored and the summer returned.
Today, this world honors Lümamoph's sacrifice in its cycles. Around the end of the year, the weather cools, and Mutamoph takes charge of ruling Altairus. But when spring arrives, the horns of Fatamoph and all other unicorns grow back, allowing warmth and life to return.
Summary
This myth is an explanation for the yearly cycle of the seasons, much like the myth of Persephone.
When Altairus was young, Mutamoph laid an egg on what later would be the Summer Solstice. Over time, however, the Heart of Altairus grew lazy and Altairus's sun began to fade. One night, when the sun appears to die altogether, Mutamoph's egg hatches. The offspring, Lümamoph (literally "light beast") saves the world by using his powers to restore the sun. This costs him his life, but he is reborn as a star near the sun (also referred to as Lümamoph, or alternately the Sun Star).
Variations & Mutation
In the earliest version of this myth, dating back to the Golden Era, the Heart of Altairus had simply lost some of its power, or the change is simply left unexplained. It was only in the Silver Era when the line about the Heart of Altairus's neglect was added, for obvious reasons.
Certain retellings also tend to emphasize that Fatamoph losing his horn is why unicorns shed their horns every winter.
