Session 1: A Heist Goes Sideways

General Summary

Foreboding Visions

Nigel, you find yourself in the city of Dianmallo, but something is different. The sky is dark, the sun is grey, and the air is frigid. Your entire torso is covered in blood and bodies of about a dozen creatures surround you.

Hovering over a body you see a golden knitting needle, bright and golden juxtaposed over the greyscape. It flutters around, a bright tail following it, but never leaving the body it has found itself above...

Neighboring bodies are a mixture of humanoids. They are all undiscernible due to some haze covering their faces, but you can make out some features on some of them - tattoos, red skin, fanciful armor, etc. But the figure that the needle is hovering over begins to dissipate the haze, and a discernable face becomes visible...

Nigel, you see your hand move down towards the body. As it makes contact, the needle pierces through your hand into his heart. A breath enters Demicoso, and Demicoso begins to see this unfamiliar face in life, but one that seems so familiar in this dream. As you look at the bodies on the floor, one catches your rapt attention. You see amongst the corpses two very familiar faces.

The first is an insanely old orc with a beard so long it would reach his liver, if it were not scorched and laid on the side. The second is another, much younger orc - though older than you - with a skull helmet on that appears to carry a dying flame. They are both unmoving.

As you both arise and stand up, you look toward the Northwest. Far in the distance, high above the clouds, you see a dark storm approaching. The needle, flying high in the air, circles around to gain a terminal velocity and flings itself at the storm. It bounces off. It tries again. It bounces off. It tries a third time, and the moment it connects the needle shatters.

The storm moves faster. Accelerating. Five forms emerge from the storm clouds as they hit the walls of the city. It covers everything. You wake up. Nigel, you hear before you awake, "Another failed attempt..."

A Heist Invitation

Cut to the The Gilded Keg, where a figure named Red Tunic (Tiefling) approached and offered information about the Big McRibbit in exchange for a job to Salxius. Rupert was there, and together they brought in Gunther and Demicoso. Gunter was certainly eager to get back at the Ribbit, and Demicoso was told "it would be a simple moving job." The cleric Nigel was brought in as support for the mission. He immediately recognized Demicoso and brought that up to him in the Sunk’n Norwegian.

Additionally, while scoping out the tavern in the early parts of the morning, Gunter saw a Halfling-sized and medium-sized (hooded) giving a small satchel to a medium sized person in an alleyway.

In the Norwegian, Red Tunic informed the party about a noble, Lord MacGuff, who has a valuable vault in his manor that holds a special oculus. In return for the oculus, Tunic would give them more information about Big McRibbit. He shared in advance that the Ribbit was known to hide out in the Mosaic District, but would give more info on return of the device.

"I know a guy..."

In an attempt to scout out the place, Sal called upon a contact, Marluxia - a halfling who used to be in shady private contracts and lived in the same area as MacGuff. Marluxia welcomed Sal with open arms in his small abode, and with the gift of an expensive bottle of bourbon, Marluxia shared some helpful info:

  1. The Toadstools were bringing in human recruits, but no human toadstool members can be seen. Who knows what the heck is going on there?
  2. The incident with Gunther was an odd one - Toadstools don't just poison willy-nilly.
  3. Gave solid numbers and figures for MacGuff's security detail.

When Sal started pressing on the Ribbit, Marluxia backed up and told Sal to get out of the house and never speak of it. He seemed pretty freaked about the whole ordeal.

Staking out the Manor

The party took some time aside to stake out the MacGuff manor and Nigel sent Sal in invisibly to look within. Sal was able to get an idea of the layout of the manor and know where the attic access was.

When a plan goes sideways...

On the day of the heist, the party waited for the lights to turn off from MacGuff's room... instead they saw another figure in the silhouette. So they sent Sal in to take the items from the vault. However, once Sal got to the Lord's room, he found MacGuff handing the oculus to a mysterious cloaked figure with a mask. The mysterious figure slashed the noble's throat, killing him instantly, and upon seeing the open door, shot a bolt into it, missing Sal by a few inches.

Sal ran back to watch her exit but no exit was observed... He returned to the party and reported his findings.

Gunter went to the door, lied about receiving some sort of portent that the "noble was dead" and the guards went up and verified he was indeed deceased. However, Gunter could not convince Garrett the Veteran in charge, to let him in. Garrett took all the guards to the vault to "ensure its safety." He left the Ogre in charge, whom Gunter could not convince to let pass.

Though through clever spellcasting, the Ogre became distracted and the party made their way inside and to the vault. Only to find that all the guards had died and the two Veterans were being attacked by a bear carpet rug and a gelatinous cube and a hundred mage hands.

Battle ensued with the party, and they barely saved the other Veteran - Liam (he is nice to the Ogre) - from the Gelatinous cube with 1hp. When Gunter grabbed the chest inside the Cube, it grappled and attacked him - because it was a mimic. Session ended there!

Session ended on the 8th of Palesun around 11:30pm, near midnight.

Character(s) interacted with

Marluxia, halfling male who handles "shady private contracts" and lives in a nice home in the Gails district of the Mosaics.
