Julen wears two gold and danburite rings on his left pointer finger, one half an inch wide and one only a quarter inch, and a platinum ring with an onyx on his left ring finger. He also wears dangling platinum earrings, similar to these, to show off his status as royal and unworking.

Personal history

When Julen was born, he was expected to be his older brother Carnelian's Master of Affairs when he took the throne. Growing up in his perfect brother's shadow was no easy thing, and Julen had to learn to bend the rules to win his cunning father's attention. His dedication to winning his father's approval paid off and Cordier was so impressed with his persistence and ingenuity that he began privately tutoring Julen in manipulation, politics, and subterfuge. The palace greenhouse is one of Julen's favorite places to this day because it's where these lessons took place. Julen's future was completely changed the night before Carnelian's 25th birthday, when he would have been coronated. Cordier had Carnelian assassinated, and Julen was named the new heir. Julen had to wait five years before he came of age to take the throne, but Cordier was in full support of the arrangement. To this day Julen isn't sure if Cordier's plan was for Julen's benefit or his own. A year after the change in succession, Julen married Saris Niarryn, a noble from the neighboring country of Soren, aiming to solidify the relationship between the two countries even before becoming king. They had two daughters, Diamond and Onyx, whom he doted on from the time they were born. Julen wasn't so kind to his wife, however, and nine years after their marriage his abuse went too far and he killed her by mistake. He covered up the blunder and put on the act of a mourning husband, but began taking out his anger more on his "defective" mute daughter, Onyx. While continuing his father's plans of expansion--with Soren as his primary target--Julen has been grooming his older daughter, Diamond, to be just as cunning a ruler as he is.

Accomplishments & Achievements

His biggest accomplishment was gaining his father's primary attention. After that, his greatest achievement has been conquering Thienid, which was supposed to be the most threatening of the Titanian countries. He took it, however, with little resistance, which he attributes to his own prowess.

Julen's relationship with his father started out rocky, because his brother Carnelian was already the favorite. But through determined cunning, Julen found his way into Cordier's good graces to the extent that Cordier had Carnelian assassinated and placed Julen on the throne instead. Since then, Julen has done his best to remain in his father's favor.

History

Julen grew up in his older brother's shadow. Carnelian was always the perfect son, the one who always pleased their father. Likewise, Carnelian always looked down on Julen. When Julen won his father's attention, he began to look down on Carnelian, as well, which made Carnelian insecure. It wasn't until Carnelian was killed the night before he would have been king that Julen realized just how much his brother had meant to him.

Beryl was always kinder to her boys than Cordier was, and she always preferred Julen to Carnelian. She was a good mother and tried to instill her morals in Julen, but his desire for paternal acceptance overrode them.

He's similar to Lex Luthor from Smallville (especially when it comes to his relationship with his father). It could be argued that he's also comparable to Jacob from the Old Testament, since he stole his older brother's birthright and blessing through trickery and manipulation.
