Airkna Stone
Airkna Stein
Airkna Stones are a type of menhir (standing stone) carved and erected by the ancient Jerai people of Southern Jerain. While there were examples of these stones found across the south, the majority of the stones stood in the flatlands south of the White Mountains. These menhirs stand between ten to fifteen feet tall, three to five feet wide, and usually a foot or two think at most. The stones are rich with Kianon energy and believed to have been sheared off from Arc Stones sometime in the ancient past. Runes are carved into the stones and inlayed with a Copper alloyed metal. Each stone has unique runes, most never repeating on anywhere else, and they have yet to be translated.
Airkna stones seemed to have two effects on the region. First is a warming effect around them. According to legends of the Madradi, their lands lived in eternal spring until the Normon of Novyum arrived. Lakortha explorers arriving in Southern Jerain corroborate the unnaturally gentle weather of the lands south of the White Mountains. This is believed to be due to the Airkna stones abilities, with enough stones across the land to alter the entire region. During the invasions of Jerain by the United Kingdoms of Novyum, most of these stones were stolen away negating the enteral spring.
The second effect of the stones was too calm even the most violent predatory creatures. Many of the carnivorous species that dwell elsewhere vanished from the lands south of the White Mountains. This strange power only effected animals and low intelligent creatures and monsters. Human and other self-away races feel a calming effect when near a stone, but it does not alter their behavior as it would an animal.
Thousands of Airkna once stood across the south. At most, a few hundred remain today. In the modern day, much of the ancient power of these stones has been lost, with so many removed from their locations. Most of those that remain have been toppled over by Trijan religious zealots trying to destroy the old pagan ways. The stones still retain their abilities but have lost the networking connection to cover the entire land. Hunters have survived monster attack thanks to stumbling near a Airkna and calming their pursuer. Legends of lost children huddling near a stone to stay warm through blizzards are common folklores. Local communities hold the stones sacred, partly for their abilities, but also for the heritage and history they bring to the region.
The stones that were stolen away to Novyum largely ended up in the Plashin Range. These Airkna helped create Plashin Pass through the glaciers of the mountains. They were also spread across the mountain range in an attempt to make it an environment more suitable for humans. This 'Grand Enterprise', as it was called, backfired melting the glaciers and flooding the farmlands below the mountains. Today, these stones are largely lost in the remote mountains, forgotten by most, or stolen away by adventures for rich nobles. These stolen stones stand in castles and on estates in the Heartlands. Their abilities aside, they are usually collected for the status they bring to the owner of one. The most famous of the Airkna in Novyum are those of Plashin Inn. The collection of stones surrounds inn's grounds protecting the inn dwellers and guest from the weather and beasts of the mountains.
