The Winding White

Behold, the Winding White! Thanged's mightiest river!   Longer than the Nile. Wider than the Amazon. Deeper than the Mississippi. Widely believed to be the only major river on Thanged, this majestic body of water stretches all the way from its source at the Northern Ring to its mouth where it empties out into the Great Salt Marsh. To ancient Men, the river is eternal, but in the modern day it is believed to be but the latest incarnation of a series of glacial rivers that have developed since the planet itself formed. Perhaps some day thousands of years from now its bed will fill up and a new river born, but for the time being it serves as the beating heart of the plains and the lifeblood of the nearby city.

Geography

The river is bordered on both sides by steep stone cliffs overgrown with vegetation, but this version is far too young to have carved deeply into the rock as other rivers on the Oldworld have. Larger trees can be found growing along the banks, their branches stretching over the current, but the Flood Season often scours away all but the oldest and mightiest, and even those might succumb in time. The current is very strong, making swimming or navigation by boat virtually impossible. It cuts through Kundain and serves as the western-most line of demarcation for the Lonesteads bordering Bainshaebo.   Its largest known offshoots are Lake Danaetanera where her sepulcher is found and the Gual Phu de Aclu deep in Tirmutua.

Ecosystem

Nearly every beast great and small from the Grand Cresta to the little sttanavoseni visit the river regularly. Numerous species of fish dwell within the currents and many birds such as the gherfen prey upon such bounty.

Ecosystem Cycles

The river sees its lowest water levels during the Storm Season as caevas draw moisture up north before surrendering it at the start of the Flood Season.

Climate

The bordering area is mostly temperate: windy during the Storm Season, wet during the Flood Season. The only point ever recorded in history where the river froze in its banks occurred during the Dread Winter.

Fauna & Flora

Numerous species such as Grand Crestas, Pei monkeys, vitreelas, wild kirya, and tree bears can be spotted along the shore. River frogs often lie in wait eager to catch the unwary Pei or sttanavoseni. Wild Richtho plants can be found interspersed through vegetation along the shore.

Natural Resources

Ore
Unknown. Roth's Edict prevents industrial operations or even surveys, though it is possible to pan small amounts of metal such as dererium, it is often not worth the effort.
Minerals
Very Abundant. Riverbed silt is abundant in everything from silica to calcium and invaluable for building material. Aside from the water itself, it is perhaps the most harvested resource.
Oil
Negligible. Black water has never been observed anywhere near the river even as natural springs save for the delta in the Salt.
Sulfur
Negligible. Even if traces could be found, it is likely diluted beyond recognition or use by the powerful current.
Precious and Semiprecious Gems
Limited. The greatest concentration can be found at the Lake of Glittering Treasure fed by the White, but on occasion one lucky fellow might find a valuable stone while panning silt.
Biomass
Very Abundant. Aside from the numerous birds and beasts that frequent the shore, the grasses grow tall and thick and are harvested regularly for use in paper and clothing.
Hardwoods
Poor. There are very few sections of the river where old growth can be encountered, and most are not fit for use in either architecture or furniture.
Stone
Abundant. In addition to silt, larger rocks can be pried loose from the river bed, likely carried downstream all the way from the Northern Ring. These can be used in a number of projects from building homes and walls to decorative gardening.
Water
Very Abundant. The river nurtures just about the entire planet in some form, whether through storm rain or floods. Deres famously created his first major project diverting some of the river's water to the Lonesteads using his aqueduct network.

History

See Thangien History and the Dread Winter

Early men once dwelt along the shore before being forced to flee. After the people returned south from hiding and encountered the gods, they engaged in a monumental effort to build a great city close enough to the river to make use of its bounty but far enough to avoid the seasonal floods.

Second Thangien-Thunthen War

Hostile forces under the command of the Daggur Clan attempted to cut off access to the river by taking control of the aqueduct network, forgetting a source from further north still supplied Tirmutua. Ander Vai Stel Vethu of the House of St'lur famously routed the occupying forces, returning water to the Lonesteads and the city.

Events of Fight Alone

The team first encounter the river in Ch. 15 "The Black Unicorn" while searching for the culprit behind the strange phenomena plaguing Tirmutua and Kundain. When their search on the eastern bank turns up nothing, they take to the sky astride their Pegasi steeds to survey the western shore where they first spot the creature created by Phitdaitiarona.

Events of Cataclysm War

The Ronin and their allies arrive on Sky Platform Argonauth to attend the opening ceremonies of the Blood Dawn in Ch. 15. The Argonauth itself has to set down inside the river because of its immense size and displaces a great deal of water as a result, bringing the waterline very close to the bank.

Tourism

The river is visited frequently by Freelanders in Kundain or work parties needing silt for building materials. The waters are far too violent for swimming or rafting, but can be easily flown over by pegacorns and their modern incarnations Pegasi. Lonesteaders maintain the network built by Deres eons ago and will occasionally bring their kirya herds to graze along the shore.
After a few minutes, T’plaureth held up one arm, signaling for the column to halt. They did so, and he held his hand out to the side, fingers splayed. “BEHOLD! The Winding White! Thanged’s mightiest river!” he shouted. The Ronin gazed down the slope at the massive frothing river. Water surged against submerged rocks, erupting into the air in impressive displays.   “Whoa…now I’d love to go white-water rafting in that!” Cye beamed, looking giddy.   “Are you sure about that? That’s like a level 7,” Ryo remarked uneasily.   “I know!” Cye replied excitedly and returned his gaze to the river. Ryo made a face.

While the people hunkered down with only their strongest and bravest hunters venturing abroad, the mouth of the river remained readily accessible to provide life-giving water without the mess of waiting for ice to melt.

Flames spun in an expanding ring that yawned wide over the Plains of Kundain, a shallow roar filling the air. The populace of Thanged watched in amazement as a massive craft exited the Sol Gate, plummeting towards the ground before thrusters fired and the colossal air platform leveled out over the Winding White. Blasts of hot air from the engines sent thick grass whipping over the plain as the Argonauth slowly lowered into the wide river. The water surged higher, rising very close to the shore from being displaced as the keel came to rest in the river bed.
