First Thangien-Thunthen War/ The Blood Walk

And for her people, she bled...   Not so much a epic clash of armies as a contest of egos and wills, the newly ascended Supreme High Overlord Das Anazhar brought his troops to the gates of Bainshaebo in a show of force intended to cow the Thangien's queen Danaetanera III into submission. He issued various demands, seeking to claim Thanged as a vassal-world. As skilled with a sword as she was, instead of challenging the Dragon King to a duel, Danaetanera III performed an act which simultaneously horrified and humbled Das Anazhar. Knowing the people would never see him as anything but an invader and tyrant, he abandoned his plans and departed peacefully, honoring Danaetanera III's sacrifice and bidding farewell to her daughter, Princess Alahaedra. The Blood Walk-as it came to be called-saw a truce between the Warrior Folk and the Dragon Men that lasted for nearly three thousand years...up until the usurpation of the Daggur Clan, and the ignition of fresh hostilities.

The Conflict

Prelude

Deployment

Lonesteaders had aught to do but hunker down in their farmhouses as the Plain all around the city became clogged with various types of Thunthen vessels from troopships to fighters stretching all the way to the banks of the Winding White. Those in the city could muster a war host if needed, but at the time only Danaetanera herself, Alahaedra, and a small entourage went out to parley with the Dragon King.

Outcome

Alahaedra succeeded her mother as Queen while Das Anazhar withdrew all of his forces and turned his attentions outward towards distant star systems.

Aftermath

Das Anazhar's actions were viewed as cowardly by many detractors, despite the numerous technological advances made in the interim. His clan's support base began to fracture until things came to a head with the Dasphat Revolution and the rise of the Daggur Clan.

Historical Significance

Taking place three thousand years before the present day, the actual confrontation itself is simply referred to as "The Blood Walk", and as a result the conflict started by the Daggur Clan is often erroneously referred to as "The First Thangien-Thunthen War" despite it technically being second. Additionally, current ongoing hostilities are referred to as "The Second Thangien-Thunthen War" despite technically being the third such engagement.
“Who’s the woman in the other one?” Cale asked and pointed at the depiction of a majestic woman clad in an imperial gown with her arms outstretched. Rivers of red flowed from narrow lines in her wrists and cascaded out and down, ending in what looked like droplets, but closer inspection revealed curled-up humanoid bodies.   “She is Queen Danaetanera III: An ancestor of ours,” Australa added proudly and clasped her hands behind her back. “And the greatest of the great queens that ruled before the institution of the Council of Houses. Three-thousand years ago, a mighty commander of the Thunthen came to Thanged and tried to claim it for his own. Queen Danaetanera went forth to parley and in his presence, cut her wrists.” Australa drew her fingers down the side of her arm to illustrate. “She proceeded to walk along the outer wall of Bainshaebo, and for each living soul within, she shed a drop of blood. When she completed the Bloodwalk, she turned to face the commander and said: ‘By my blood, have I secured the lives of my people’. She collapsed into his arms and died.   “So moved was he by her sacrifice, that against the wishes of his people, he withdrew his forces to Planet Thunthen and vowed that never again would his people raise arms against Planet Thanged. She was considered the greatest of our heroes until my father’s time for securing peace. It was a peace that lasted until the death of my father…”

Legacy

Both Danaetanera III and Das Anazhar are portrayed as key historical figures with dedicated story-windows at the Archives of Raaezen. Danaetanera herself was interred in a specially-designed sepulcher built in the middle of a lake wihch would come to bear her name. Even though the Anazhar Clan were overthrown, his descendants endure and prosper in the distant Redali System.

"Danaetanera's story-window portrays her as having great cascades of blood gushing from her wrists, but more than likely the cuts were very small. Still, given the sheer size of Bainshaebo's outer wall, its no wonder she bled out. There are some who question why she did what she did. She was purportedly a very skilled fighter-she had to have been to best all of her competitors and become Roth's champion-so why not engage Das Anazhar head on? She was still fairly young at the time, so she could not have suffered from old age. Did she suffer some terminal illness unbeknownst to even her own family? Or was she really as foreseeing as the stories insist, and she predicted exactly Das Anazhar's reaction?   "Das Anazhar could have bowled over Bainshaebo's defenses if he wanted to, but did he really want to given Danaetanera was Roth's champion, and Roth was-and still is-a real god? If Das Anazhar had somehow embarrassed or bested Danaetanera, Roth wouldn't retaliate, but the Blood Walk fulfilled the 'Path, Peril, and Proving' doctrine. She proved willing to surrender her life for her people, and in the face of such a sacrifice, the Queens would personally take to the field. Das Anazhar couldn't risk that."

In Literature

Because Danaetanera had Roth's divine favor, the Blood Walk is recorded in the Geodolpha as well as other historical treatises. Even though llaudaind enjoy creative freedom and autonomy from the Watch-Rider, some troupes purportedly planned performances insinuating that the two heads of state were somehow tragic lovers. Alahaedra was so furious at the rumor she swore on Witheren's name that she would personally vthiasak every llaudaind associated with the script, and thus it remained a mere rumor as she would not have invoked the Maiden of Blood's name if she didn't actually mean it...

Technological Advancement

The Thunthen had a plethora of ship types and firearms at their disposal, while Thangiens had swords, pegacorns, and fyrhundi. If Danaetanera III's gambit had failed, the engagement would have likely devolved into heated skirmishes and guerrilla warfare, assuming the gods didn't vaporize the invaders first...

In tribute to the fallen Queen, the Supreme High Overlord later personally delivered a stockpile of precious obsidian from his homeworld to adorn her sarcophagus

This is a heck of an article! I love the art you've done for it! The dragon folks look badass as heck even if they aren't going through the best time here. Well done on the conflict article!
