The Kodar

Like scattered stars, the lights of Kodar's insects danced on the water's surface, their glow reflected in the stillness of the expansive pool. A colossal tree, towering like a mountain, stretched its canopy over the valley, its roots coiling like thick snakes around the cliffs of the island it stood upon. Eviar gently stirred the water with his staff creating a single, widening ripple, distorting the otherwise perfect mirror.
~Silverbird   The Kodar is a great rainforest located in the central part of modern Aimane. It spreads from the Gundushad mountains to the Helot planes and the fields of Ordán. Legend speaks of the Kodar being Younger than Aimane itself, created around the time of Niérna as a result of the wrath of Aziel, who was enraged by the destruction of his greatest work Tordisti. In the Kodar, he poured all his grief, his hatred for mankind and the choking experience of the void left inside of him, for Tordisti was a part of Aziel himself. But the Kodar is no place of inherent evil or otherwise devoid of hope and bliss; the Kodar is a wild place first and foremost, to be untainted by human hands, so that Aziel's works can remain for eons more. It is a place of enchanting beauty that has inspired many human artists before; some daring enough venture some miles far under the canopy, seeking uncharted mysteries worth musing about despite grave dangers beyond the walls of the forest.

Geography

The Kodar has a diverse palette of appearances. Rolling hills are the most common appearance of the forest, but flat ground can be found around the Elkhorn plain and near clarak lake. In the western Kodar, the terrain is rugged but relief differences are relatively small. As one nears the Gundushad mountains, the terrain slopes up and eventually turns into vertical walls and further the snow-capped peaks of the Gundushad. There is no steady ground here, as the line between mountain and cavern blurs into a great maze of hollows and rock stacks. Expeditions have found vertical drops that go as deep as eight kilometers, and possibly further distances in flooded caves. It is generally assumed that the deepest pits in the Gundushad Kodar connect to Eron's Caverns. A significant part of the terrain is decided by the plant growth, as the ancient trees here grow roots that an untrained eye can mistake to be immense rock bridges.
Similar terrain can be found among the cliffs of Diria. These rock formations lie southeast of Clarak lake and split the Kodar in two, where Eron's caverns also reach up to the surface. The cliffs of Diria erect from the smooth hills surrounding it like knives cast into the earth by Eron himself.
The Kodar is split by many streams and rivers, a great deal coming from the Gundushad mountains. From clarak lake comes a great river, the Gnaw. This river gains many tributaries flowing from the Gundushad, and in the swamps of Turrane the Gnaw flows into the bay of Bul. The Swamps of Turrane have trees fewer and farther in between, and it is a flatland, unlike the Gunudshad which are relatively close nearby.

Ecosystem

The Kodar is characterized by dense vegetation consisting of trees and shrubs. In addition to vegetation found outside the Kodar, the forest has greater trees, in size and shape not unlike the ancient trees of Aziel, shapen when the world was young. Their roots go deep and are thick; how deep none know. Their trunks tower above the rest of the forest and their canopies cover whole valleys and are ecosystems in themselves. The Kodar has many species that rely on each other for nourishment and structural support, and it is not uncommon to find stacks of living matter, forming a great web of symbiotic and parasitical relationships, consisting of plants, fungi and animals alike. Indeed it is said that the soil itself is alive, in every corner of the woods, and if one fells a tree in the far western reaches of the forest the trees on the eastern wall, four hundred miles away, can notice the change.
