Lia Krake

She wasn’t the first of her kind. She would not be the last. But having wild magic really was rather difficult. The lands around Neuvoterre held remnants of the wild magic that had created this place, and every now and then, a child would be born with the chaotic wild magic fused into their bodies. Lia was one such child.

Born to a high elf mother and human father, tales of magical surges became interwoven parts of the story of Lia’s childhood.   Lia grew up in Isalume, the only child of Filauria Wintergood and Magne Krake. She spent her early childhood at home with her dad, as her mother worked at the town hall as part of the local council often making yourneys to the capital to work with the higher elven council.   Her days would be filled with running around the house, into the gardens, going into town or on small outings into the nearby woods, where she would try to befriend all animals she saw without a trace of fear. Magne would often shake his head lovingly as his toddler attempted to chase down another squirrel, offering to share her snacks while shrieking joyfully in gibberish and giving off the occasional bit of lightning.   There were the many nights her parents would find their infant child floating in her crib, emerged in happy dreams, and the first time Lia got truly upset and scorched ground around her in the marketplace, because her mother had said no when Lia begged for a particular candied apple. Or the season of the giant pumpkins, that only grew enormous because Lia had spent the whole summer playing in their vines and pretending the gourds where her friends and pets.   When Lia came of school age she was enrolled in the local school, all the teachers aware of her disposition towards outbursts of wild magic. For Lia that meant that she would often be left out of group activities that could trigger big emotions, and at playtime teachers would often keep close and encourage her to play calm games, rather than run wild.   The towns people around her also knew not get Lia too excited, and often told the girl to calm down and centre her emotions. Lia never really understood what that meant, but it did instil in her an almost allergic reaction to those words “calm down” or “control your emotions”.   At home, Lia’s mother, Filauria, agreed with the cautious approach taken by teachers and other people in the village, whereas Magne was of the opinion that his daughter might as well learn to harness her magic sooner than later, and all the mollycoddling was doing her no favours.   “Honestly, Filauria, all it does is stifle her development and control of her magic. I understand it’s easier for the rest of us, not having to figure out how to live with her outbursts of magic, but we are only teaching the girl to fear her powers rather than make the most of them!” Magne would argue with his wife, when Lia was tucked in and fast asleep.   As Lia and her classmates finished school, Lia’s best friends, Kel and Aelua, set out and left Isalume. Kel, a Swallow like Birdfolk, went to apprentice with the blacksmith in Duxton, while Aelua, a Pure Faen, went to Neuvoterre to work in one of the local merchants' shops, both wrote many letters back home to Lia with stories of the wonderous people and creatures they encountered.   Aelua would sometimes travel with the merchant to get new supplies from around Aevania, which led to even more wonderful stories for Lia to read. However, Lia remained in Isalume, as her mother especially felt that it was not safe for the girl brimming with wild magic to travel around the world. So Magne secretly trained his daughter in small acts of magic, and used his skills as a leather worker to create an explorer's outfit that would suit his darling girl and gather a pack for her to bring with her on adventures.   At first, Lia went on small trips away into the woods around Isalume, learning to fend for herself and use her magic without people constantly acting rather worried she might blow something up. As her confidence grew, along with Magnes confidence in her, she started venturing further away from home, and eventually started exploring the whole of the southern isles of Aevania.   And so, life went on and Lia grew into a young woman, conflicted with her own glorious magic, never quite making the connection that her magic and emotions tied together, even though she saw first-hand how different feelings gave her spells different outcomes.   As she visited the larger cities, she was for the first time confronted with her mixed blood. In Isalume no one cared, and children of mixed races were a common thing, so Lia had never really thought much about her heritage of being half elf and half human. During her first solo visit to Iron Oak, she was accosted by members of the Puritanicals and harassed for her half-blood status. After this Lia made much effort to present as elven as she could, unable to hide her pointy ears and the fey marks left on her by growing up in Isalume and close to the Feakin of Neuvoterre.   Despite trying her hardest to blend in as a pure elf, rumours of the purple haired wild magic sorcerer from Isalume reached the Half Blood Rebellion. One day as Lia sat on the curb outsides of the merchant's shop, where Aelua worked, waiting for her friend to finish for the day so they could go get a drink at the Jolly Pixie, a member of the Half Blood Rebellion approached her. He introduced himself as Kilug and was clearly a Ungetüm and asked if Lia might be sympathetic to their cause. Lia, marked by her experiences in Iron Oak, responded that while she was indeed sympathetic to the Half Blood Rebellions cause, she did not think herself brave enough to support it yet.
And this is where we find Lia now, out to find her own voice, confidence in and control over her magic and confronted with the world, while being much less protected that she was growing up in Isalume.
