Physical Appearance and Structure
Humans are warm-blooded omnivores with internal skeletons. Typical adults are just short of two meters in height and walk upright. Humans have two arms and two legs. Their hands consist of four fingers and an opposable thumb.
The physical characteristics of humans are as varied as worlds in the cosmos. Human skin color ranges from pale white to almost ebony. This color is maintained through their life cycle but does darken when exposed to ultra-violet radiation. Most humans have hair covering their head and most males have the ability to grow it on their face. Hair color varies greatly white, yellow, red, brown, and black are all common among different ethnic groups. Hair color often turns gray with age.
Senses
Humans have above average binocular color vision and sense colors between the infrared and ultraviolet spectrums. Binocular vision gives them good depth perception and motion detection. Human audible range of frequencies is usually 60 to 24,000 Hz, although there is considerable variation between individuals. Human hearing also provides good separation and direction-sensing qualities. Their skin is sensitive to touch. Their senses of smell and taste are not as well developed as their sight and hearing.
Speech
Humans have a voice box or larynx which produces audible vibrations. Each spoken word is created out of the phonetic combination of a limited set of vowel and consonant speech sound units. The human lexicon consists of roughly 10,000 words. They are gifted with ability to create a wide variety of sounds, and have no difficulty speaking most xeno-languages. All humans speak Pan-Sol, a combination of English and Chinese.
Society and Customs
Human society comprises a multitude of governments, attitudes, and lifestyles. Though the oldest human cultures trace their histories thousands of years into the past, when compared to other species, human society seems to be in a state of constant flux as empires fragment and new dominions subsume the old. In general, humans are known for their flexibility, ingenuity, and ambition.
A human family usually consists of a male, female and 1-12 children. In many human cultures a family is part of an extended clan. Families and clans band together into communities for mutual protection and support.
Attitudes
Humans are prolific, and their drive and numbers often spur them into contact with other races during bouts of territorial expansion and colonization. In many cases, this leads to violence and war, yet humans are also swift to forgive and forge alliances with species who do not try to match or exceed them in violence. Proud, sometimes to the point of arrogance, the race's diversity among its own members also makes humans quite adept at accepting others for what they are. Humans are usually quick to accept races with similar anatomy but may initially be mildly nervous around species with insectoid or reptilian appearance.
Heroes
Ambition alone drives countless humans, and for many, adventuring serves as a means to an end, whether it is wealth, acclaim, social status, or knowledge. A few pursue careers as heroes simply for the thrill of danger. Humans hail from myriad regions and backgrounds, and as such can fill any role within a crew.
