The Deicide
The Deicide is a unique Greatsword, rumoured to be of ancient origin created before most civilisations came about. The specific creator is unknown but mentioned in texts hundreds of thousands of years old as being a member of a group called the Ancient Ones & used in a conflict called The War in Heaven. Supposedly made of a single long blade of obsidian shot through with microscopic threads of adamantium, silver, and mithril, it is a rare piece. The pommel & blade guards are made of adamantium, silver & mithril as well, in the form of coiled serpents with the heads, mouths open. When seen it does not seem to have aged at all and keeps its edge.
Thought lost for aeons it appears occasionally, when there is great turmoil in the world. When this happens, it is usually when a great hero or villain rises, and the balance of power is swinging too much one way or the other. When it does, it is generally seen as an ill omen, especially when the blade's power to target a named individual is activated. To do this an hour-long ritual is needed and only the Yuan-Ti or certain blasphemous grimoires from a by-gone era contains the proper ritual. In every case a sacrifice of a powerful cleric of evil is needed to gain the blood to halfway through the ritual to bless the blade. To do this a part of the blood is used to draw a magical double circle on consecrated or desecrated ground with it. Four candles made from the fat of a Celestial is needed. Some of the remaining blood is used to draw magical sigils in the two circles and the candles placed to the cardinal points. The last of the blood is used to draw the name of the would-be victim on each side of the blade and placing the serpent heads in it. When this is done, this blood is sucked into the weapon and ready to be used.
The last time it was seen was when Attila the Hun rode the world and rumoured to be a victim of it. It lies somewhere, so it is said, in central Europe ready to be unearthed again and ready to be used again.
History
The Deicide is rumoured to have first been created hundreds of thousands of years ago. Exactly who or what created it is unknown. What is known is that it was created for one reason, and one reason only, to kill deities and to kill their minions. It seems, according to the blasphemous grimoires & texts it is mentioned in, says it was created to be used in a conflict called The War in Heaven. Multiple creatures & deities were said to have died in this war, and the one creature wielded the weapon for the whole time. This creature no-one knows, but it is mentioned gained enough power by killing to flee to the Far Realms. Whether this was the same as the creator or not is presently unknown.
According to legends, this creature has sent the Deicide to the Material Planes to tempt mortals into the act of killing as much as possible. By doing so, the creature feels that the blade itself is capable of killing more powerful entities. Yet all the while nothing seems to come of the killing, and according to the lore the power it absorbs goes straight to the entity that truly owns the blade.
Every creature that has wielded it has died violently & gruesomely or disappeared in strange circumstances. It has been said that the last person killed by it is Attila the Hun and was used to kill him in his marriage bed. Whether true or not is not known. It was also rumoured to have been present at the death of Julias Caeser, Boudica and at least one pope. Even older stories tell that Yuan-Ti Abominations, Ancient Dragons, Edler Giants, and high-ranking demons, devils, and celestials have been killed in its presence.
Now rumoured to lie in central Europe in some wasteland waiting to be discovered by a 'worthy' wielder.
Significance
As a 'god-killer' weapon it is sought by only by the most powerful & dangerous warriors looking to make a true name for themselves.
"Never wish for that sword. So many suspicious deaths when its nearby. And a god-killer to boot. Powerful indeed you might say, but you'll damage yourself spiritually. With the ritual to mark a target. Both sides will hate you and look to kill you at every turn. Corruption can only come from it. Good and evil in one.
As for the gods, they and their minions will hunt you down destroying anything you can throw at them. When you play with fire and all that after all.
Story goes if you find the right book it will have a magical ritual that will summon it or attract the gaze of its creator. Either way, you'll find it and then somehow find the way to activate the powers within it. Getting the ingredients to do a specific ritual with it, you'll be able to take out specific targets far easier. Requires some ingredients that are best left alone. Nasty so they say."
