Port Smoke-Side

"The city of Smokepowder, the birthplace of the wheel-lock, the home of Emburley Arms and Munitions. Though Waston claims the invention of firearms as a whole and rightfully so, Port Smoke-side is well known for three things. Smoke-powder manufacturing and refining, firearms, and an open port. There is a reason by old man Emburley moved their business here despite his government's wishes. He does not approve of the Wastonian world view, and believes in the world we live in any and all should be able to acquire the protection of a good firearm should they so desire and have coin to pay. Furthermore it is a port where we can dock and be left alone even by foreigner vessels, even those from foreign navies. Such is the power and prestige connected to being the location responsible for the lion's share of refined smoke-powder produced worldwide every year."

A Moran captain explaining the basic reasons he is unconcerned even as his spotter calls out there are ships in port from three navies that have bounties on their heads.

Wandering the weaving streets of the port city, you can't help but notice the diversity of looks, ethnicities, and dress. People whom are obviously pirates, ignored by people in naval uniforms from various nations. Beyond this, as you move down through the docks and manufacturing district towards your intended destination you also note a truly shocking thing. Everyone is armed. Every adult, more or less, barring a few exceptions, is carrying a weapon. A firearm no less. You'd been told that this port city was the center of the world of firearms and guns, but you simply did not understand what that meant until now. You are used to getting odd looks, stares or even glares for the revolver you wear, but here? It is either unnoticed or in many cases looked at with disdain, its simple craftsmanship seeming to elicit a response bordering on disgust from some. As you pay closer attention you can see why. The pieces are not bulk gear from some store front of auction, or a few years outdated pattern of some military's as yours is. They are, even the 'working' individual's it would seem, excellent pieces. Fine finishes, always with some minimal amount of decorative engraving and work done on them beyond the basics. The extravagance increases seemingly with wealth. It makes you feel under-dressed in the oddest way though you have no reason to. Your gun may look rough around the edges but its served you well and true for years. That's all you can ask for.

As you move into the manufacturing district and trade docks, the scent of the sea mixes with something all to familiar to you a smell that seems to always linger, much like the sounds you hear all around you from different shops, testing grounds and more. The smell of burnt smokepowder. Slightly acrid, a touch sulfuric. A fragrance and aroma that to you brings back memories of boarding raids on the high seas, pistol and cutlass in hand, or defending your own deck and crewmates from foul mer. Or the chase and initial engagement with a prize, the thunderous volley of cannon fire. You find yourself considering deeply diverting part of your plans. You need to go and meet with the Atlan Outrigging crew at their dry dock to make sure they are ready for your captain's ship. However a small detour with the nice hefty take form you and your fellow crewmate's last prize might just be enough to acquire a second gun, a perhaps even an Emburley Revolver. You turn right, heading up Gunner's Lane with purpose. After all, there is no better time or place than Port Smoke-Side for such business.

History

This city has been established as another key production settlement and though not considered truly neutral ground, no one captain would be fool enough to attack or raid such a place or bring petty squabbles or rivalries or acts of piracy near it. This is the city well known for its manufacturing facilities and sees heavy import traffic, even from Waston, as well as from smugglers and traffickers, and from pirates bringing large amounts of raw materials seized in trade for smaller amounts of finished and manufactured goods. In particular the name references the city as an armory of sorts, the place all Moran Pirates would go to seek cannons and small arms. It is also the mercantile city, a place where merchants willing to do business in such shady climes and with such shady individuals, will inevitably end up if they journey to Mora.
