The Weave

The Weave has no single true source and was a way through which raw magic was accessed, tapped into and used by casters of magic. The Weave was the way in which magic presented itself to beings for their use, and it flowed throughout all known worlds, touching almost every corner of existence, with exception of dead-magic zones.   In Abroden, the Weave was considered many things, including a god, the source of magic, all the studies of casters, arcane and divine alike, and the many energies and forces that existed around the planes. Many saw it as a "fabric" on which magic was "drawn", and damaging the fabric caused magic to go awry. Preparing a spell was a means by which a small amount of the Weave could be "contained" and transported for a specific effect, while the casting of a spell was equivalent to telling the Weave to rearrange itself to create the effect.   Importantly, the Weave was not magic itself, but rather a force by which its flows could be channeled, and a means by which magic could be understood and harnessed. Other systems for calling upon magic had always existed within the Realms, but the Weave was by far the most commonly used, thoroughly refined and best understood.   The Weave was also linked to fate, and a rare few individuals could manipulate such connection to alter the future to their advantage.   All that changed when The Weave was permanently altered by The Unravelling War.

Events Leading to The Unravelling

In Abroden, the Weave was extensively studied by a group of mages who called themselves The Arcanum. They rose to prominence from 1500 BU onwards, and spread their knowledge far and wide to whomever are blessed with the gifts to weave the tapestry. By 1058 BU, the mages uprising placed The Weavers at seats of power all over the world. Monarchy declined and Magocracy was instated.   With entire nations' resources at its back, The Arcanum's magic and arcane studies grew by leaps and bounds. At 755 BU, a major breakthrough was discovered. The Arcanum juxtaposed the arcane with science, and founded a new branch of magic - ArcanoTech. This new breakthrough applied scientific methodologies into the arcane, and enabled the industrialization of magic into areas where no one has seen before. Inevitably, this drove the divide between the elite magic ruling class, to the non-magic wielding folk.   The unrest eventually spilled into revolts, rebellions and uprising against the ruling elite. This eventually spilled into a full-scale conflict - The Unravelling War.

After Unravelling

The cataclysmic event that took place at the end of the war was called The Unravelling. It torn Abroden apart, cleaving the main continent of Ubros into two... now called Kaldora & Ubros minor. These two new landforms are now separated by wide expanse of ocean. Navigating these waters is nigh-impossible, with remnants of the cataclysm still lingering, in the form of a rift through space, aptly named - The Tear.
