The Guardians of the Horizon found the Soulsword in a secret cave beneath the Wizards of Wines Vineyard & Winery.

Vorthos D'Artagnan was granted a strange vision in a dream:

Vorthos
You find yourself embraced in a quite darkness. Lowly, in the depts of the void, a singular sound meets your ears. Thum-thump. Thum-thump. As you search around this vacuous space, you find only the hilt of a familiar, bladeless sword. Thum-thump. With each beat the Soulsword seems to glow with a dull red light. Thum-thump. As you grasp the Soulsword with your hand its blade ignites. Gzzt. Thum-thump. Thum-thump. In the distance another light seems to pulse. Thum-thump. Closer. Thum-thump. A crystal sphere radiates with a blood red light as your blade pulses with the same scarlet glow. Thum-thump. Thum-thump. The sphere hates you. Your sword hates it.

Having been attuned to the Soulsword for some time now, Vorthos experience another vision:

Vorthos
The light of your sword begins to envelope you. Suddenly you find yourself atop the walls of a castle with three auspicious towers standing in a vigil over the land of Barovia. You see that you are stood before a crowd of opulently dressed attendees. A slender figure besides you speaks, "I'm sorry, my lord, we cannot wait for him any longer, we must begin the ceremony."
"Fine, but you tell king-brood-lord-the-tardy that he owes me when next you see him," you hear yourself say, though with a voice you have never heard before. The figure does not seem amused.
"I'm sure his lordship will find your jest humorous," says the figure who you now can recognize as the one Majordomo Rahadin. The Dusk Elf moves through to the back of the crowd and signals to a quartet as he passes. The bards begin to play a soft march and the crowd takes their seats in the lines of pews.
Suddenly you find yourself still stood at the same altar but now before the most beautiful woman you have ever seen. An angel in white, with auburn hair, and a face you find familiar - Ireena. You are marrying Ireena Kolyana. "I do," you hear yourself affirm, lost in her beautiful dark eyes.
A priest standing to your right speaks up, "and do you, Tatyanna Kolyana, take Sergei von Zarowich to be your loving husband, in health and in--," the priest trails off. A darkness falls over the scene as a large volume of clouds suddenly obscures the sun, a murmur rushes over the crowd . An imposing figure is stood at the top of the aisle. Though the presence fills you with fear and dread, the body you possess, Sergei, seems relieved instead.
You project, "brother, it's so kind of you to joins us such lowly peasants, for your only family's wedding day! I was beginning to think you'd miss my big day." You gesture to a seat at the front of the crowd and smile. Your brother does not return your smile, his face as still as stone. At this distance you can't be sure, but a glimmer seems to run over his cheeks as though he had been weeping. "Are you alright, Strahd, what's wrong?" you say now with dutiful concern.
"I'm sorry, brother," Strahd clears his throat and raises a sword from his cloak, the Soulsword though still with its crystal blade unbroken, "I seem to have missed the objections..."
