Vocation: Sorcerer
Sorcerers are Weavecrafters with the innate ability to cast spells through willpower rather than learned discipline. Sorcerers often come into their Vocation much younger than other Weavecrafters, and tend to have a natural talent for showy magics and flexible displays of power. Sorcerers are capable of subtly influencing their spells in ways that other Weavecrafters are not, known as Metamagic, though this often means that they are able to master only a limited selection of spells compared to Mages and Witches.
Sorcerers have a reputation for being free-spirited and often shying away from authority and tradition, though this is not always the case. It is believed that Sorcerers cast their spells based on intuition and emotion, rather than the law and order of Mages, which often makes them appear more chaotic in nature than they truly are.
Famous Sorcerers include Maleena Fenbrook, the current High Lady of the Noble House of Fenbrook, Turan Wilder, the Head of the Sorcerer's Guild in Longhaven, and Gisela Beneke, the so-called Queen of Wild-Magic.
Career
Qualifications
Sorcerers tend to have higher than average Charisma and Constitution, which supports them in their spellcasting by allowing them a certain degree of resilience to the less refined energies they control. Most Sorcerers come into their Vocation with the Calling of Weavecrafter.
In order to follow the Vocation of Sorcerer, individuals must have:
- A Mana Pool
- A Weave Channel
There are no formal qualifications or examinations required to become a Sorcerer.
Career Progression
Paths
Sorcerers can choose to explore their innate abilities and bring forth their natural talents by following a Path. These Paths are not chosen; they are innate within the Sorcerer (generally via their bloodline or by gift of a greater power) and are representative of the origins of a Sorcerer's magical abilities.
Dragonblood
Descended from or blessed by Dragons, Dragonblood Sorcerers have a hint of the essence of Dragon Magic within them that manifests in certain dragon-like abilities. It offers certain protections, and can offer certain additional traits that mimic those of Dragons.
Earthborn
Earthborn Sorcerers tend to come from bloodlines with ties to the Jann class of Djinn, or that have been blessed by beings associated with Elemental or Sylvan Earth. These Sorcerers show heightened constitutions and often lean toward proficiencies in earth-based spells and Abjuration.
Flameborn
Associated with blessings of Elemental or Sylvan Fire, or having bloodline ties to the Afrit class of Djinn, Flameborn Sorcerers are often hot-tempered to match their fiery spell leanings. They are typically resistant to fire and have a tendency toward fire-based spells and Evocation magics.
Stormborn
Descended from Tayaar Djinn or having blessings of beings of Elemental or Sylvan Air, Stormborn Sorcerers are masters of the wind and weather, making them extremely popular amongst sailors. Many Stormborn are resistant to lightning damage, and they often excel in wind-based spells and Illusion magics.
Waveborn
Progeny of the Ghawwas class of Djinn, or blessed by those of Elemental or Sylvan Water, Waveborn Sorcerers are known for their adaptability and resistance to poisons. They are typically good swimmers, and often show preference for water-based spells and Transmutation magics.
Wildling
Wildling Sorcerers embody the concept of Chaos, manifested via blessings from Fiends, Fey, or beings of the Chaos Domain, or by a Fey or Elemental Bloodline. This bloodline is particularly common in Navians due to their Fiendish blood, and can occur spontaneously in those exposed to high concentrations of Raw Mana. Wildling Sorcerers are prone to sudden rushes of unstoppable, chaotic power which has the potential to help or hinder.
Employment Positions Suitable for Sorcerers
Stormborn Sorcerers are sought after by sailing groups to better their chances of fair winds out at sea. These Sorcerers are often paid a very fair wage for their abilities, and many Captains will attempt to lure them from other crews with greater pay and benefits.
Sorcery Guilds are always on the lookout for new talent to assist in shaping future generations, though the reputation for aversion to authority and regimen tends to deter many a free-spirited Sorcerer from signing up.
Adventuring or Mercenary work are typical roles for Sorcerers looking for more excitement, though most operate in Support roles rather than on the front lines. It is also not uncommon for a Sorcerer to wander alone, offering their magical abilities as freelancers.
Sorcerers within Guard positions are rare, but those that do choose the stricter, more regimented profession often find themselves within higher paid specialist units.
Perception
Social Status
While those with a specific Vocation are looked upon more highly than the average Commoner, Sorcerers often find themselves looked upon with suspicion and unease due to their reputation for chaotic tendencies. Despite this, Sorcerers in positions of power often find themselves looked upon with awe and reverence.
The Mage-Sorcerer Rivalry
Nobody is wholly sure of where this perceived rivalry began, nor who instigated it, but it is not uncommon to witness Mages and Sorcerers butting heads publicly. Mages have a habit of viewing Sorcerers as uneducated bunglers, while Sorcerers view Mages as needlessly secretive and magically prudish.
However, some of this boils down to little more than friendly rivalry and banter, with many individuals of these Vocations getting on very well with each other. There are rarely outright spats between the two, though in the past some local rivalries between Guilds or Schools became heated, leading to some errant spellslinging and collateral damage.
