Vapour Blade
Magical blades designed for industrial use as much as combat, Vapour Blades are rare and unusual in the current Age and are considered Legendary items of historical significance. Currently, there are only five known to have been recovered, but only four have been revealed to the public. The fifth remains in a private collection. Of the Vapour Blades known to have been recovered, three are believed to be "longsword-type" (as in the hilt is typical of a longsword), one is "shortsword-type", and the last is "dagger-type". The one in a private collection is a longsword-type.
Vapour Blades are formed from a concentrated elemental enchantment of air and water, held in place by the hilt, which has been specifically crafted to contain the energy. These hilts are all similar in that they have smooth, swooping decoration and small guards, often with opal and lapis lazuli embedded into the designs. The overall shape and power of the blade varies depending on magic power inherent within the wielder. Individuals with small or no Mana Pools will find that the blade remains loose and difficult to control, while those with larger Pools can create strong, powerful blades.
These blades were designed to be used as tools for moving turbines, as much as they were crafted for combat. The blades of the swords can be dispersed to create clouds of steam, mist, or fog, which can then be used to push loose or spinning objects, obscure vision, or even heat small spaces to the point of scalding. When used as a sword, Vapour Blades are incredibly light, making them fast, agile weapons that require great dexterity and wisdom to use properly. They can leave both scalding and slicing injuries, and are easily concealed by dispersing the vapour of the blade.
History
It is believed that Vapour Blades were originally crafted by Mages and Artificers of the 3rd Age as a means of assisting in powering magical machinery. Available writings suggest that it was considered more efficient to use magical tools rather than innate Mana to enhance machinery such as turbines. It was discovered that these early Vapour Blades made great weapons as well as tools, and thus they were assigned to Weavecrafters who worked within the engineering industry as both a means of defense and as a required utility item.
After the Fall of the Floating Cities and the decline of Artifice, the Blades all but disappeared. It wasn't until late in the Age of Darkness that the first Vapour Blade was uncovered, during an excavation of a known Floating City ruin. This example, a longsword-type Blade, now sits within the Muriedge Museum as one of their most prized items.
Significance
Vapour Blades are extremely rare, and are highly sought after assets by museums, Artificers and Weavecrafters. However, most "Vapour Blades" are discovered to be imitations, and real blades are kept closely guarded.
