The Watcher - Constellation

The Watcher is a constellation consisting of a ring of seven smaller stars surrounding a larger one. It is associated with the True A'arden God Warde, whose titles include "The Watcher" or "The Eternal Watcher". It is a constellation associated with protection, resilience, and duty.

History and Significance

The Watcher constellation is said to have been created at end of the Titan War, when the True A'arden deities defeated the Primeval Titans with the assistance of the Sylvan Pantheon, the Tuatha de Danann, and the newly evolved Elemental Fey.

According to scriptures of Haul, Boone, and Warde, amongst others, Warde created the constellation when he tossed a necklace made from eight of the eyes of the Pyrtinos into the air, suspending them in the skies above A'arde so that He may "always see what perils come for our Realm". The necklace had been used during the Titan War to improve Warde's vigiliance, and the creation of the constellation was symbolic of Warde's eternal duty; a promise that the God would never turn His eye from the dangers that would threaten the Material Plane. From this action came Warde's title of "The Eternal Watcher".

While also acting as a normal constellation with its own interpretations of Fate, the Watcher is also revered amongst followers of Warde as a symbol of duty and modesty. However, it is also a warning; the All-Seeing Protector is not so easily fooled. Those who would try to bring the world to its knees should do so at their own peril, because ultimately, Warde's gaze cannot be avoided.

The Watcher is known to occasionally change colour from its regular blue hue to a red one. This change happens quickly, and is known as the Red Gaze. When the Watcher is experiencing a Red Gaze, it is thought to be an omen of immenent catastrophic danger.

When travelling, some folks will invoke the protective aspects of Warde through the constellation with the phrase, "Guiding light of the Watcher, let Warde's protection be with me".

Astrological Meanings

Rising

When the Watcher is at its brightest, it is interpreted to mean that actions taken in the name of the defence of something important will prove productive. Protection magics are strongest when cast under the light of a Rising Watcher. Fate is against those who would attempt to bypass defences that protect an object or person, and individuals attempting such exploits should consider their options carefully.

Waning

When the Watcher is at its dimmest, it is a warning to remain vigilant, as danger lurks within unknown shadows. Extra precautions should be taken with protective wards and spells, and guardians of all types should remain alert. Plans to infiltrate or otherwise procure a heavily defended item or person stand a greater chance of success if weaknesses of protection are detected.

Manifestation

The constellation of the Watcher is comprised of seven smaller stars in a circular pattern, surrounding a larger star located vaguely in the centre of the circle. The stars have a bluish hue and are located between the Serpent and the Chalice constellations. The Watcher is visible in both hemispheres, though more so in the north.
