Spite Blade

Crafted from the poisoned spines of the Spiny Myrialoth (a monstrously huge, spiney, Fiendish centipede), Spite Blades became common weapons amongst the rank and file of Devilish armies during the Age of Chaos, where they were used against Mortals and Fey alike.

Spite Blades are characterised by a curved, single edge blade mounted into a bone hilt. These hilts are often wrapped in leather made of Sapient skin, and on occasion feature crossguards made of beast horns. Spine Blades are innately poisonous, with the spines of the Spiny Myrialoth continuing to secrete their fluids long after they have been removed from the creature. However, they do eventually run dry, so all Spite Blades are crafted to that the blades are easily replaceable. Spite Blades can vary in size and weight depending on the original length of the spine they are crafted from. However, the spines can only be exchanged like for like depending on the hilt size. For example, a hilt designed for use as a longsword can only take longsword length spine-blades.

In addition to their innate poison, Spite Blades are magically enhanced and keened. The hilts are often imbued with the ability to cast poison or acid-based spells, and also offer their wielders resistance to these kinds of damage. Additionally, Spite Blades will often do their damage twice, should an opponent prove to have a low constitution. It is said that the blades often give off auras of malicious intent, as though they have a desire of their own to cause harm, which is likely where the name "Spite Blade" came from.

History

Spite Blades were first seen used in the initial incursions into the Material Plane after the Floating Cities fell and Arcane magic went wild. These types of blade had never been seen before, and it has been suggested that the Devil armies may have been forewarned about the upcoming tragedies in the Material Plane, resulting in them improving their arsenal.

The Blades saw regular use during the Age of Chaos into the Age of Darkness, though they are significantly rarer in the Material Plane now that the Fissures that allowed the Fiends into the Material Plane have been sealed. Some examples still exist within private collections, and a few have even gone on display at various museums around the world.

That said, many places consider it extremely distasteful to use a Spite Blade, and some parts of the world have banned them from private ownership altogether.
