Pool Occlusion
Pool Occlusion, also known as Mana Pool Blockage, is a condition whereby the Mana Pool of a creature is temporarily cut off from the rest of the Mana System. The condition occurs upon the consumption of certain foods and potions, and is considered among the Mana-Inhibiting Conditions. As with other Mana-Inhibiting Conditions, it differs from Antimagic Conditions in that it is an effect that occurs inside the body, rather than a localised phenomena cutting off magic from the outside.
Pool Occlusion has three variants; Inflow Occlusion, Outflow Occlusion, and Complete Occlusion.
Inflow Occlusion is the prevention of raw Mana from entering the Mana Pool and replenishing it. Those with the condition can still use magic, but are unable to replenish their Mana reserves until the condition ends.
Outflow Occlusion is the prevention of processed Mana from flowing out through the Weave Channel. This condition means that magic cannot be cast, not even through the use of Cantrips.
Complete Occlusion is the prevention of Mana from flowing in either direction, completely shutting down the Mana Flow system. It is the most serious of Occlusion conditions, but is also the most commonly used in the prevention or treatment of Mana Overload.
Transmission & Vectors
Mana Occlusion is attained by consumption of Mana Occlusive foods and potions. Examples of these Occlusives include:
- Scheras Root
- Manasisto (Potion)
- Tardofluxus (Potion)
- Antamira Leaf
- Grave Misthorn Mushroom
Mana Occlusion is not infectious and cannot be passed from one creature to another.
Causes
All types of Mana Occlusion are caused by the consumption of certain types of food or potion, known as Mana Occlusives. These are generally consumed intentionally, though there have been instances of accidental ingestion where travellers or adventurers have misidentified edible roots.
Symptoms
Mana Occlusion generally has no symptoms except for the inability to utilise or replenish a Mana Pool, depending on the type of Occlusion. While this alone is not problematic, repeated use of the Mana Pool during Inflow Occlusion can lead to Mana Exhaustion. Some individuals who have experienced Mana Occlusion state that they feel a strange emptiness within them, or a sudden sense of silence, though the severity of these sensations is generally mild and subside within a few hours.
Treatment
As Mana Occlusion is generally induced on purpose, most individuals simply wait out the condition. Accidental ingestion of Occlusion-causing materials can be counteracted with Anti-Occlusives, though these often cause side effects such as nausea, flatulence and bloating.
Prognosis
The condition is temporary and Mana Flow is generally restored within 24 hours of consumption. However, excessive ingestion of Occlusion-causing materials over a long period of time can result damage to the Mana Pool. Additionally, improperly processed materials can cause digestive problems when used long-term.
Affected Groups
Mana Occlusion can affect any creature that possesses a Mana Pool.
History
Mana Occlusives have been used for millennia by Witches as a means to combat Mana Overload, though specifics as to its original discovery were lost during the fall of the Age of Arcana. The knowledge of the creation of Mana Occlusives is considered staple knowledge for anyone following the Vocation of the Witch, and Alchemists consider such potions to be a staple within their stores.
Mana Occlusion has been frequently induced throughout history to combat other conditions related to Mana, as well as to protect those in possession of a Mana Pool from environmental effects that could damage their Mana Systems.
Cultural Reception
Mana Occlusion is considered a necessary part of the treatment of other conditions, such as Mana Overload, and is therefore accepted globally as a medical treatment. In some parts of the world, Mana Occlusion is purposefully attained as part of various rituals, particularly those dedicated to the search for personal insight and growth.
