Megasoma
Megasoma is a transmutative weapon that can switch between a brooch and a greatsword using a command word. It is a weapon of Fey origin, having been crafted by the Archfey craftsman, Earnan, for one of Aoibheall's favourite Knights when he became an Archfey. Megasoma was both a gift and a mark of honour, bearing a Seal of Aoibheall which marked the bearer as one of her most trusted servants.
Megasoma has only ever had one wielder, the Fey Knight Barra Maolaoibheall, who is believed to carry the weapon to this day, though the Archfey is rarely seen by Mortals.
Megasoma in its brooch form resembles a Fey Silver elephant beetle with powdered onyx enameled into the wings. As a sword, the blade is thick, rounded, and curved with a sharpened inner edge and a small, sharpened fork at the tip, resembling the horn of an elephant beetle. The crossguard is shaped like beetle wings and glimmers with blue-black iridescence, while the grip has the texture of hardened carapace.
Alongside its transmutative abilities, Megasoma acts as a focus for Barra's spells, and has been magically enhanced to reduce its weight, improve its efficiency and keen its blade. Additionally, Megasoma can be used to cast a small number of Ranger-type spells.
History
Long into the past of the Fey, the Guardian of the Seelie Court, Aoibheall, had a favourite Knight amongst her followers. This Knight, known then only as Barra, was a dedicated and loyal servant to her for centuries, and was eventually rewarded by being Risen to Archfey status. Barra became the Master of Beetles, with which he had a close affinity naturally, and Aoibheall asked Earnan to craft him a magical sword as a sign of her gratitude and favour. Earnan made the sword as a transmutative brooch in the shape of a beetle, that Barra could always wear about his person, and Barra cherished the gift most dearly. This was Megasoma, a fierce yet graceful weapon designed to compliment Barra's strength and skills.
Barra regularly wielded this weapon into battle against Fiends and Monsters, as well as incursion from Aberrations. After the Green Knight Massacre, and the subsequent Fey Retreat, Barra chose to remain in the Material Plane as a Guardian for one of Aoibheall's Holy Places, the Grove of the Seelie Justiciar. He saw it as his sacred duty to protect this precious place, as it was one of the few places that led directly to Aoibheall's Realm. Aoibheall gave him the surname "Maolaoibheall" (meaning "servant of Aoibheall") and allowed the Knight to take his place as one of the few Fey Guardians left in the Material Plane. He kept Megasoma with him at Aoibheall's insistence, and supposedly continues to wield it to this day.
Over the years, Megasoma has been seen a few times in the hands of the Guardian of the Justiciar's Grove. However, as Barra only ever appears before those who stumble across the Grove, and even fewer dare to raise a weapon against the Archfey, almost none have seen Megasoma in its sword form and lived to tell the tale.
