Conrí

The King of Hounds

The Ardent Hound, Conrì Fearchar

Once the loyal companion of the Green Lord, Euane, Conrí is now considered a mysterious figure having disappeared after the murder of his friend. It is not known whether he is alive or dead, but many that follow the Sylvan faiths believe that he is simply in hiding, waiting for a new Green Lord to appear.

An Ascended Cù Sìthe of massive size, Conrì was the leader of the Cù Sìthe in the former Wild Hunt, and is considered the King of all Hounds outside of it. He is a loyal, honourable and noble figure, said to have answered only to Oberon and Euane, and is both a loving, loyal companion and ferocious ally.

Conrì is celebrated in both Tìr na Sìthe and The Material Plane for his loyalty and dedication. He is famous as a symbol of companionship, protection, and justice (due to his role in the Wild Hunt), and his image often adorns the equipment of hunters, bounty hunters, and adventurers. Conrì's name is often invoked as a protective charm when travelling through dangerous lands.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Conrí appears as a Cù Sìthe but enormous in size, with glowing green eyes, a set of elk-like antlers, and a shaggy coat that is iridescent green-black in colour. He is quick and powerful, with strong jaws and an alarmingly loud howl.

Body Features

As with many Cù Sìthe, Conrì has long, powerful legs, a long body with an elegant neck, and a noble head topped with alert, upright ears. His fur is shaggy, but said to be as soft as new spring grass, and his tail fur fans out as the tail curls over his back. As with many Ascended like him amongst the Fey, Conrí has a pair of elk-like antlers sprouting from just behind his ears, which are a golden-green colour.

Facial Features

The most striking feature that Conrì possesses are his eyes, which glow a vibrant green. He has a black nose and his teeth are said to be pristine white.

Identifying Characteristics

Conrì's massive size sets him apart from other Cù Sìthe, as does his iridescent coat and the large, golden-green elk-like antlers. Additionally, Conrì's green eyes are unusual amongst Cù Sìthe, who tend to have amber or blue eyes.

Special abilities

As with all Cù Sìthe, Conrì has the ability to run silently as he hunts, and can teleport short distances. However, unlike other Cù Sìthe, every time Conrì bays or growls he can cause terror in the hearts of those who can hear him, while his howl is capable of inspiring courage or fear as he desires. His endurance and his speed while running are near supernatural, able to keep pace with even the steeds of the Gods, and he has extremely keen senses of sight, hearing, and smell. Additionally, Conrì can use trees to travel around locations he has been granted "freedom", such as Coille Mhòr, Gleann Monarc, and Coille Iargalta. He also has the ability to grow to the size of a draft horse, which he has used on occasion to transport Euane and Oberon across vast distances.

While Conrì was never an Awakened, he nevertheless has an understanding of language and can communicate both telepathically and empathically with anyone he chooses, regardless of languages known.

Personal history

Conrì was born in the earliest days of the Wild Hunt, before Na Sìthichean a Dh'eirich were lifted to Godhood in A'arde's Tìr na Sìthe, and long before the Antimagic Curtain of A'arde was pulled down by Aegis. As a pup, he was rescued by Oberon (then known as Oran) from a monster that came from a lake, with the pup choosing to stay by Oberon's side as he returned to his home. Oberon offered to share the pup with the young Euane, his adopted younger brother, who had at that time not Come of Age. The young Fey named the pup "Fearchar", which means "man friend", and the three became inseparable companions. However, as they got older, Oberon was more frequently called to assist the Ancients in their endeavours within Tìr na Sìthe, leaving Fearchar and Euane home alone. Fearchar loved the brothers dearly, and despite being only a hound, seemed to understand that Oberon was bound by something called "duty". Therefore, Fearchar decided that it would be his duty to look after Euane in Oberon's stead. Despite Euane having Come of Age, his power had not manifested due to a blocked Mana Core, leaving the young Fey despondent and feeling like a burden on his powerful older brother, which Fearchar would not stand for. The hound would slink out while Euane was resting and find him powerful Mana Plants, hoping that these gifts would help to unlock Euane's blocked Core. When Oberon found out, he was so pleased with Fearchar that he gave the hound a collar made of enchanted leaves that would allow him to convey his thoughts and emotions to the brothers, making communication easier. While Fearchar did not necessarily understand the concept of language at the time, he did understand that this gift was a blessing, and wore the collar with pride.

When Oberon was lifted to Archfey status, he insisted that Euane came with him to his new home, Coille Mhòr, and Euane subsequently brought Fearchar with him. Fearchar remained loyal to both Oberon and Euane, joining the Wild Hunt with Oberon and proving himself a dedicated and noble hound. Outside of the Hunt, Fearchar stayed by Euane's side, protecting him and keeping him company while Oberon tended to his duties. As Oberon's power, and therefore his duties, grew larger, Fearchar kept Euane busy by exploring Oberon's lands with him. However, one day, Euane and Fearchar encountered a creature known only as an Uath, a Dread or Terror (or sometimes Úath, meaning “Horror”), while out exploring, and found themselves running for their lives. They became trapped in a hollow with the creature bearing down upon them, and in defense of his beloved friend, Fearchar rushed in front of Euane to take a fatal blow. In response to Euane's fear and desperation, the block around his Mana Core shattered, allowing Euane to call for Oberon's help.

After Oberon killed the Uath, Fearchar was dying and Euane was devastated. Oberon, not yet a God himself, begged the Ancients for their help, and they guided him through the process of making Fearchar an Ascended, though they were unsure if the process would work with him so close to the precipice of death. Oberon bestowed upon Fearchar a title, The Ardent Hound, so that even if he did not survive becoming an Ascended, he would be forever remembered as the hound who saved his brother's life and allowed him to finally come into his power. Ultimately, Fearchar survived and was given a new name, Conrì, "hound king", and he joined Euane in his journey to discover more about his new powers.

Conrì became the King of Hounds, the overall leader of the Hounds of the Wild Hunt and the close companion of both Oberon and Euane during the Hunts. He stood guard over the brothers when they rested while out in their lands, and attended Oberon's ascension ceremony when he was lifted to Godhood by the Ancients. He also attended Euane's ceremony when Oberon lifted him to Archfey status.

Taboos

It is considered extremely rude to refer to Conrì as a hound or a dog alone, due to his Ascended status, and anyone following the Sylvan Pantheons will quickly correct those who make such a mistake. Conrì himself was known to have occasionally bitten those who were rude to or about him or his friends, so insulting Conrì to his face, or insulting Oberon or Euane, was asking for trouble.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Conrì is bound by a deeply ingrained need to protect his home, and those he considers his family. His disappearance after the death of the Green Lord has caused some to suggest that he too perished, trying to protect his beloved friend. However, some theorise that he may in fact be guarding the last remnants of Euane, waiting for him, or his descendants, to someday return.
