Cane-Sword
A Cane-Sword is a type of concealed weapon most commonly favoured by Noblemen in parts of Eirinn, where it can be considered impolite to openly carry a weapon in "polite company", and only permitted Guards are allowed to do so. They are considered a rapier-type weapon due to their slender form, though the cane casing itself can also be used as an improvised weapon. Cane-Swords are generally used as a defensive weapon of last resort, as in the past their construction left them inferior to standard rapiers and daggers, however recent innovations in the field have led to far more resilient blades and housings.
Cane-Swords can vary in length, and are made to accommodate varying heights and proportions of individual, though most would classify proportionately as a form of rapier or needle-bladed dagger. The grip/handle can be crafted with various designs and shapes, and the very best Cane-Sword housings are made with hardwood bound with metal.
Some Cane-Swords are enchanted with magical abilities, but these enchantments vary depending on who has requested the item. As standard, they are generally non-magical.
History
While it is believed that Cane-Swords existed during the Age of Arcana, their use was completely eliminated after the Floating Cities fell. The Ages of Chaos and Darkness did not require the use of such concealment, so the methods for the creation of the weapons, if they indeed existed, were lost.
During the early Age of Redemption, when the Codes of Chivalry and Nobility were being written, the first Cane-Swords were created in response to new customs of etiquette that were being drawn up. The original Cane-Sword was made in Curtana in 396 Y6A, for an unnamed Nobleman who refused to attend a meeting of his peers unarmed as his life was being threatened. For him, the concealed weapon was a good call, as he was targeted mere moments after the meeting began and was forced to defend himself.
Early Cane-Swords were not particularly robust; the process of hollowing out the housing meant that the canes were not as sturdy as standard canes, while the blades were shorter and less sturdy than their rapier counterparts. However, recent innovations in swordcrafting have allowed for a much higher standard of quality in the manufacture of Cane-Swords. They are still less readily available than a standard rapier due to the complexity of their construction, however most large towns and cities will have a vendor that stocks at least a few.
