Border-Fey Ring Swords
In the Border-Fey, rings and ring-shaped items are given as signs of unity, devotion, and honour, be that through family, marriage, or dedication to a cause. The Border-Fey Ring Sword is no exception. Used by both Border Rangers and Border Knights, they are symbols of prestige and duty, given to those who pass the rigorous training and assessment requirements of the Border-Fey's defensive forces.
Border-Fey Ring Swords are most often longswords or greatswords amongst the Border Knights; longswords or shortswords are more common amongst the Border Rangers. While the design, length and weight of these swords can vary, they all have one common feature that identifies them as a Border-Fey Ring Sword; the ring on the end of the pommel and a curved, triangular shape to the crossguard. While the rings are functional, helping to balance the tip-heavy blades commonly found within the Border-Fey, they are also symbolic additions that can help to identify a wielder's profession, division, and rank. The curved crossguards are believed to provide better hand protection. The rings on the pommel, which are often held in place with a bolt or rod through the centre of them, can vary in design and decoration depending on their wielder's status and rank. Additionally, each separate division within the Rangers and Knights can use different designs of base ring.
Most of the Ring Swords are unenchanted other than some basic enhancement magic. Some swords for higher ranking individuals may be Keened. Rarely, swords used by Clerics and Paladins may have Divine enchantments placed upon them.
History
Border-Fey Ring Swords first saw action at the end of the Age of Arcana, following the Fey Retreat. They were designed and issued to infantry of the Border Knights in response to the unease that was caused by the Green Knight Massacre. The use of the ring on the pommel was meant to be symbolic of unity and devotion, but it also came to be recognised as a symbol of honour.
As the Age of Chaos reigned, the Ring Swords expanded to be issued to all Knights and Rangers. Receiving their first Ring Sword was considered a supreme achievement for both Rangers and Knights.
Significance
Border-Fey Ring Swords are considered a symbol of devotion, unity and honour. Once issued, each sword is carried by only one wielder, and the sword is buried or burned with them when they die. If a sword is broken during combat, new blades are crafted to existing hilts. If the hilt is broken, the Knight or Ranger is often issued a complete new sword, but will always carry the old one with them. Losing a sword is considered a major dishonour.
