Is there a way to merge this character with the character article? How about changing NPC protagonists to protagonists (PCs)?
Hi! You can connect a PC with a world by editing a character from the Heroes interface and using the sidebar ("Connect to [world]" button). This will automatically create an article in the world using the information you provided in the character profile. You'll be able to edit the article/profile from "both sides" IIRC. I don't think there is a way to merge a character with an already-existing article, but the character article template and the Heroes profile both have the same fields. As for the second question, you can just edit the NPC -> "Make NPC to PC" section in left sidebar -> enter the player's username. Hopefully that helps!
Perhaps I'm being really daft, but I can't find this NPC-->PC option anywhere. What screen is it in?
Hi! It's in edit Campaign -> Supporting Cast (NPCs) -> edit the NPC you want to change -> box in the sidebar with the title "Make NPC to PC". Hope this helps!
Ah, marvellous, thanks! The step I'd missed was adding the character into the campaign in the first place. Sorry, still very much the noob.
Hi there, I would like to know: 1. if and how I can get a new RPG system into the available selection? 2. can I connect a character to more than one system? i.e. I would like to use DSA (the dark eye) stats as well as D&D
Hi! For the first question, not all systems have character sheets available, as it's a volunteer effort (there are so many systems that if the WA developer made them, he wouldn't be able to do anything else!). Unfortunately, only Grandmasters (and above) can create new templates for sheets and blocks for a system that does not have blocks yet. As for the second question, I'm afraid that's not possible currently!
Hi, I can't answer your questions, but I just wanted to give you a signal that I might be working on a template for DSA5 - but that might also take a several weeks (I am fairly new to the System). I'm currently facing the same problem that I'm using a mix of DSA and Pathfinder (I know it's not D&D :-) ) for a single campaign. BTW: You don't happen to play the G7? :D
Sorry mate, I primarily play homebrew and even that mostly in our own world. Furthermore, only have basic knowledge of the G7. Still, thx for the DSA5 info.
Hi A few of my characters have created elements of their backstory that are secret. Is there anyway to filter who can see that information? If they connect their character to my world and therefore create an article, can I set that information to secret to hide it?
Hello, Yes, you can use secrets (Guide to Secrets) to make some parts of the content private, because you're a guild member. They should work in character profiles too, but I'm not sure.
What is the difference between an NPC created in a campaign like a PC , and an NPC created in the world editor ?? Where should one create all the NPCs in the campaign ? Also, can a PC become and NPC ?
NPCs are created in the campaign, "Supporting Cast (NPCs)" section. Using the world editor, you can create character articles, which use the same template regardless of the character being an NPC or a PC. Character articles and campaign NPCs can be linked though; when you are creating the NPC, there's an "Advanced options" dropdown that lets you choose a character article to link. PCs can't be transformed into NPCs, as they are controlled by the player (although they can give edit access to the GM).
Edit the character profile, there will be a button in the right side bar. You have an explanation and screenshot of the interface in this guide, under the FAQ!
As a DM, can I make heroes for my players? They have their printed character sheets, but I want to use WA characters for note taking. And how can I let my own hero (as a character) join my own campaign? Because I want my own character to be the chronicler.
Hi! No, PCs need to be created by the players themselves (although they can then give you access to their virtual sheet so that you can edit them). As a workaround, maybe you can create them as NPCs? If you want to have your PC be in the campaign you are DMing, just copy the campaign invite link, then access it with the PC activated. But the system is not designed to do that (since DMs generally don't have PCs) so it's not the mos straightforward thing to do. Hope this helps!
How can one of my PCs choose D&D 3.5 as their system? With one player I got the correct Character Sheet by making them create a new world with 3.5 chosen. Then when we went back to editing the character a "D&D 3.5 Character Sheet" option had appeared. I just tried to do the same with another player from our group, but a 'create new world' button is nowhere to be seen. This all seems a bit wonky as we ultimately just want 3.5 edition character sheets that I as GM can edit.
Hi! That's probably because dnd 3.5 does not have an adapted character sheet. It seems that you found a workaround though, so you can tell your player to enable Worldbuilding features from their account details and the new world button will appear. For you to get edit access to their character sheets, tell them to edit their characters and click the "grant access to storyteller" button in the right sidebar.
Thank you! 'Enable Worldbuilding features' was the step that we had missed :)
what is the maximum number of characters for a non-guild member?
Unlimited! There used to be a limit, but this has now been changed and everyone can have unlimited characters. Additional customisation options (such as profile CSS or custom URL slug) are still part of the guild subscription.
i probably missed it, but how do i add a character to my world
Take a look at the "character connections" section in the sidebar! Remember that these characters are PCs though, not people who live in your world. If you want to write about a person who is not a PC, use the character template (from the Create interface)
Is it possible to import character sheets for existing characters from different sites? for example I wanted to use a character I made on DnD Beyond?
Hi! I'm afraid importing external characters is currently not possible. If it ever happens, it won't be a universal feature for sure; World Anvil is system-agnostic but different web sites and rpg systems have different needs.
My Players made characters in my world before I had the campaign and Sessions set up. Are they able to move the characters from my world to the campaign or do the have to recreate them inside the campaign?
Just send them the invite link to the campaign! You should be able to get it from the "Protagonists (PC)" tab. After they access the link with their characters active, they will automatically join the campaign.
So if the RPG system I'm using doesn't have a sheet available, the whole Campaign builder is useless?
No, because the campaign manager is system-agnostic. It just means that you won't be able to create character sheets. You can still use the rest of features, such as the DSTS, party manager, NPC manager, plots, session reports, etc.
as a gm, how do I gift a character to a new player?
Hi! The recommended workflow is to tell your player to create a character themselves. Send this link to your player: [url]https://www.worldanvil.com/w/WorldAnvilCodex/a/player-workflow. It's a step-by-step guide on the recommended workflow for players.
I have seen the transfer character option before, but can't find it now. Where is the option?
Hello, how would I go about making or finding character art for this site?
Hi! World Anvil doesn't have any built-in "character art finder". If you don't want or can't get a commission, you could try looking for stock images or use something like Artbreeder to generate a character portrait. Hope this helps!
So, I have made a stat block for my player character and a stat block for a homebrew class, and race. I see there is a tab for these features in the character creation. However, I cannot seem to add these to my character's stat block. I have tried copying the ID code for these two stat blocks into their respective text boxes on the main tab and the tabs specifically for races and class. But, to no avail. How do assign these stat blocks to the Player Character?
Hi! Find the "Collections" section of your character sheet (in the main tab). You should paste the ID code (just the number alone) in the class features and race boxes. When you save the sheet, they will appear under the Race and Class Features tabs. Hope this helps!
it wasnt letting me create a second character for a second there, telling me 404 error, and when i tried to report a bug, it wouldnt let me log in :( but everything is working now :)
Hi! If you're still seeing this bug, can you report it? You will need to create a separate account for the bug tracker, because it's a third-party service. Thank you!

how do create more then one character?
Click the name of the character in the sidebar, a drop-down will appear. You should see a "+ New Character" option in there. Hope this helps!
How do you grant editing access to the GM? The button pictured above isn't there. Did something change?
Hi! I've tested it and from my Gamemaster side I'm able to edit the character sheets of PCs in my campaign without any additional step (from the "Protagonists (PCs)" tab in the campaign manager interface). Can you check with your GM if they can too?
I'm trying to give my GM access to view and edit my sheet but according to them i'm the only one in the campaign whos sheet is private, I don't remember changing anything and do not have a payed subscription
Hi! Let's try to figure this out. When you have your character active (their name should appear at the top of the left sidebar), do you see a "Privacy" option in the sidebar? If so, click there, and you'll see several options where you can controll the visibility of your character, including the sheet. Let me know if this works!
I don't get the rpg system?
Hi! Can you give me more details on what the issue is? What are you trying to do, what are you expecting to happen, and what is happening instead?
How can i save characters journal entry, memories and extensive bio?
Hi! Journal entries have a "sign & post" button at the bottom. Memories have the "Log Memory" button. The extended profile has a "Save changes" button. Hope this helps, let me know if you have more questions!
Hi everyone, I really hope someone can help me on this one.. When I edit one character's profile (both basic and extended) it edits with the same info the profile of another character of mine, what should I do to fix this?
There are two things that I can think of:
how do I get the D&D beyond import to work? Nothing mentioned in the documentation seems to actually be part of the "character" tab that I can find? There is supposed to be an import feature?https://blog.worldanvil.com/2022/03/05/dd-beyond-importer-now-on-world-anvil/ Also- if someone could point me to a written piece of documentation on how to get started - NOT YOUTUBE PLEASE! I'd appreciate it. (can't watch youtube tutorials)
Hi! To import a sheet, just create a D&D 5e character sheet on World Anvil and use the red import button on the right. This guide specific to the importer explains how it works in detail! As for getting started guides, the Getting started guide on the Codex is a good place. If you're looking for more of a workflow type of guide, you'll find several in the Codex homepage (depending on what you're using World Anvil for).
The books for the systems don't actually exist on the website, probably due to copyright and licensing restrictions?
That is correct, we have character sheet templates for some systems, but their handbooks/rules are copyrighted and we don't have permission to share them.
Hello, as the GM am I allowed to import my player's statblocks from DND Beyond or do they need to do that themselves?
The easiest way is for them to do it. Just have them create their statblocks and click the import button on the right. The Guide to the D&D Beyond importer has the full instructions for that.
How do I input a character code because I have already made a character on a different account
Hi! I'm not sure what you mean. What are you trying to achieve?
Hi! I joined your site because I really liked how your ads showed that you could make a connected family tree that can be interacted with. Which is perfect because our group is going on gen5 of our Dynasty Campaign (we're basically doing the Sims 10 Gen Challenge DND Style) and it's starting to get a little messy keeping track (we're at 58 characters and about to move to gen6). But I can't find that feature anywhere. I may just be missing it but I've checked all links and read most of the articles related to character creation and I still can't find it. Is it something locked to members with subscriptions?
Hi! This guide explains how family trees work: https://www.worldanvil.com/w/WorldAnvilCodex/a/family-trees. And yes, it's a Guild-only feature (available to any level)
Thank you so much for the quick answer! So it is something that is something that needs a membership to access, makes me feel better because I just could not find it lol. I'll look into it a bit more and see which one works for me. Thanks again!
What is the best way to manage Player Characters for a Solo Lone Wolf Campaign where I am both GM and the Players wrapped up in one, or is WA not really intended for that method of playing?
The campaign manager on World Anvil is not designed for solo RPGs. If you're playing solo, the only GM-specific tool you need on World Anvil is access to your world's lore (if applicable to your campaign), and you can access it from your world's dashboard. I recommend just creating a character, attaching a sheet to it (if the system you're using is supported on World Anvil), and you can use journal entries to keep a record of what's happening in the game.
When I attempt to create a character sheet, i do not get game systems but just "generic, text" "generic, table" and so on...
This means that no RPG system has been selected for the character! When you're creating a new player character, there's an RPG system drop-down (and you can change it in the character's settings page as well). If you're creating a character sheet by itself, the system needs to be selected in world settings. Click the gear icon in the left sidebar to access settings and select your system there. If the system has available statblocks, you'll then be able to select them when creating a new statblock.

how do I delete a character I didn't want to make?
Edit character profile -> Delete button (red) at the bottom of the page
And if the button is not available on Delete Panel?
Then it's a bug! You can report it here: https://github.com/worldanvil/worldanvil-bug-tracker/issues
