Ethereal Chains

2-level Abjuration (ritual)

Casting Time 1 action
Range touch
Duration 1 minute
Components V, S

You touch a creature and spring runic marks across their body. These points tether them to the Ethereal Plane and make movement for them difficult. When you touch this creature, they make a Constitution Save. On a failure, they become bound to within 15 feet of their initial location and move at half their speed. On a success, they take 2d6 force damage as they rip from the bounds that attempted to lock them down.   At any point on their turn, they may attempt to rip from the bonds. If they succeed, they take 2d6 force damage and may move as normal once more.   As a Ritual   When cast as a ritual, the caster must either choose a location equal to a 15 foot circle or a target that is not moving and to either trigger instantly or when any creature enters the sphere.. When the ritual is completed and triggered, a cage made of ethereal chains rushes into the air and envelops the individual and chains into them. This cage only stops the creature that activated it, all other creatures are able to move through it without effect. Creatures that attempt to break from this cage may do so as per the normal spell, but do so at disadvantage. The spell fades after 1 hour without causing any damage to the trapped creature.
At higher levels: When casting this spell at level 5 reduces the movement range to 10 feet and increases the damage to 5d6 force damage. At level 8, the range is reduced to 5 feet and the damage increases to 8d6 force damage.
