Trials of the White Herald: Preliminary Scouting

by Chronicler Amber Ashfeather

Today I was put into a group with several others from the Explorer's Guild to look into a posting on the board. A small hamlet nearby had seen ghostly apparitions in the night over the last few weeks.

The group consisted of Kittenya Cataletta, a human woman with cat ears and a tail who claimed to be possessed by her scythe. She was a bit strange but wasn't the group's oddest participant. Wonder who she hired to make that scythe? It couldn't have been Smithy, after all that idiot couldn't possibly have made something that fancy. I did recognize her weird dress armor as one of the commissions I've done in the past. Saw a lot of that equipment today. She claims that the spirits that possess her are named Black Barbarian the warrior, Vincent the mage, and Kumo the ninja. She still seemed friendly enough despite her questionable mental state.

Second was a man who said his name was Brok, no last name was given. He was dressed like one of those penny doctors who claim to help you, but actually just stick leeches on you and then claim you to be better. Think they are called plague doctors, not sure where that label originates. The guy creeped me out however, claiming he understood chemistry and having no working knowledge of the subject as well as claiming, and I quote. "Likes to watch things die." If possible I think someone in the town should re-review his application to the Explorer's Guild.

Third was a local hunter named Robert Davis. He was packing a lot of throwing knives and was really quiet. Said he likes to hunt birds which almost made the Mech jump him. Still don't think that comment was directed at me, just a matter of fact.

Finally, we had Anita Baker, a woman from one of the outlying communities with ties to the landowners of High Hedgemont. Something about her mother working their booking. She looked like a scrappy young woman, the sort who is always ready for a fight.

It didn't take us long to actually get there, it was only a few miles out of town. Ended up speaking to a man named Farmer Tim, who said that they were leaving strange waxy residue on the bushes and fencing. That the ghosts were not graceful as described in archive texts, but rather shambling. He couldn't remember the terminus point when questioned on it, just that they appeared a few weeks ago. I found a sample of the discharge and after giving it a smell I identified it was candle wax. Robert was able to use that to start tracking one of the creatures. Around mid-day we found it roaming in the forest, it was a wax golem. I thought the mechanical knight was the only construct in existence but no, this thing was an actual machine made by some other inventor. It had a speaking cone that, when pulled from its hands by Brok spoke. It said that it could tell we were leaving the forest. It invited us to "Test our metal before venturing forth." the cone which this came from then melted as Brok tossed it away from himself in surprise. A discovery like this had to be shared, I encouraged us to return to the Rest and share our findings, to which the others agreed.
