Meeting the Fey Folk

by Shea O’Connor

It seems odd in hind sight to imagine I ever saw Chuckles or Tomi as monsters. But I must admit when I first caught sight of them in the woods late one afternoon, my mind immediately went back to my fateful night in the swamp. The hulking, black form of the dragon-man seemed to my eye far too similar to the beast of my nightmares. And the strange goat-man reminded me of my one companion, a lonely borrowed sheep. However, as I watched them journey loudly through the forest, I became keenly aware of my mistake. These were two intelligent, friendly beings. Certainly both far stranger than any person I had met in my short life, but persons all the same. And the small satyr (again, a learned word) was a jolly, musical being full of good humor and mirth. After my months alone, I found myself drawn to their company. Not wanting to come upon them by surprise, I cut ahead along their path and set up a small campfire. They soon hailed me and introduced themselves. We sat and ate and soon became fast friends.

I would have hardly believed such a tale, but seeing both of them and they effects this place had upon them, I soon accepted their tales.

That night was the first of many as a travelling party, as we quickly found we enjoyed our new company. I soon witnessed both the terrible battle rage of Chuck, and the mysterious powers that Tomi seemed to have at his disposal. Both benefited some my skills as a woodsman, and were soon eating better than they said they had in some time.

We all learned form each other and further developed in our skills as we turned westward to new lands. Little did we know that our party would soon be doubling, and becoming even stranger than before.
