Eternal Night's Reign

by Aurora Frostborne

He hasn't returned. Scilia understands the facts of the matter- The cold has claimed him. That, or the beasts he hunted. Either way, her husband is lost to them. Lost to the Long Night.
She spared little time for tears- Too busy fretting over her pregnancy, and the already sparse-looking food stores. The other shelters must be just as deprived, hunting had been almost fruitless for the last few months, the prey grown wise, and the predators grown ever more deadly. At least the log stores were plentiful, there was enough to last for six months, or more, if they used it sparingly. For now, they use it almost decadently, sparing nothing to ensure Scilia and her unborn child stayed warm and healthy. She got the first pick of food, a roaring fire kept ablaze by her side all day and all night, as much water as they physically could melt from the snow. She lived like a king. It spilled over, sending burning logs rolling straight into the rudimentary pantry. Much of the food caught ablaze, the sweet smell of charred berries, and burnt meat wafted from inside, as the shelter finally put out the fire. Almost half of the food was destroyed.
The boy apologised over and over, before quietly leaving the shelter, venturing into the white wilderness, searching for some kind of food, any kind that could help them last for more than one more month.

He never returned.
