... I don't remember much of the events that transpired within clockwork monastery following our encounter with the clockwork dragon.
I remember the excruciating sound of its roar. The crunching of the cogs and gears as it moved. Enormous brass teeth and talons tearing through walls. Streams of fire spewing from its three heads.
How do we survive this ? I... I don't know what to do ? I can't see or hear Killian and Lairion.
[Lairion casts 1st level Bless on the party, Krod casts 2nd level Shatter and Killian engages the clockwork dragon in melee combat. The clockwork dragon assaults the party using its two claws and three mouths. Killian, Lairion and Krod are split up from each other engaging the dragon from different points within the temple]
There must be a way to destroy this thing !? Perhaps there's something hidden in the journal or if I try and deconstruct the blue prints ?...
[Lairion engages the clockwork dragon in ranged combat, Killian continues to engage in melee and combines his attacks with the Cantrip Sorcerous Burst and Krod uses his magic item Welger's Wand of Lightning to cast 6th level Lightning Bolt twice. The clockwork dragon makes a counter attack and Lairion and Krod fall]
[Killian saves Lairion using the Paladin Lay on hands feature. Krod manages to succeed 3 Death Saving throws and becomes stable. Between the three members of the party, the clockwork dragon is destroyed]
Fools ! What in all the hells happened here ? What did they do ?... What was that ? Oh no the temple is collapsing !... Run ! To the entrance !...
[The clockwork monastery collapses shortly after the clockwork dragon is destroyed. The party attempt to escape by using the Action Dash and a combination of 3rd level Misty Step and 3rd level Fly back through the entrance they came in]
We lie on the ground as the monastery falls apart. Enormous gears and stone break and crumble from the floating temple to the ground. when the final piece falls the sky audibly tears as if there is a crack in time itself. A final echo rings out into our minds. Seek the Chronicle of Broken Hours… below the bells of the first city you ever called home.
-Notes-The mechanisms used within the clockwork monastery are still a mystery to me, salvaging what we can from the wreckage will hopefully hold some answers or even secrets as to what was going on or even fix what is broken
1. Heart of the Lost Chronomech (Wondrous Item, Rare)
A brass sphere containing the last spark of the dragon’s power. Once per long rest, you can slow or hasten a creature within 30 ft for 1 round (no concentration). When held during a short rest, faint ticking soothes your mind — gain 1d6 extra HP from each Hit Die spent.
2. The Hourglass Blade (Weapon, Rare, Requires Attunement)
A longsword forged of mirrored metal with shifting sands trapped in its fuller. On a hit, you can choose to reverse the blow, forcing the target to re-roll its last attack against you (usable once per short rest). Critical hits cause a temporal echo: the strike repeats itself for an extra 2d6 force damage.
3. Cogwheel of Restoration (Wondrous Item, Uncommon)
A small spinning gear with etched runes that hum softly when turned. Once per long rest, as a bonus action, restore 2d8 + 4 HP to a construct, machine, or ally wearing metal armour. When held during a repair, it grants advantage on Arcana or Tinker’s Tools checks to restore or analyze machinery.
4. Chrono Band (Ring, Very Rare, Requires Attunement)
A slim brass ring with an inset sapphire that ticks faintly in rhythm with your pulse. You may take an extra reaction once per long rest.
When you drop to 0 HP, you instead freeze in time until the end of your next turn — untargetable and stable at 1 HP when time resumes.
5. The Artificer’s Last Note. A folded parchment found near the glowing heart. The ink glows faintly, pulsing in sync with the ticking.
“If any survive the collapse, know this: Time is not broken — it is bleeding. The rift must not be left unguarded.”
Attached is a schematic of a temporal stabiliser — a device that could, with the right parts, reopen the rift or close it forever.
-For the Paladin – The Chronoguard’s Bulwark
Shield (Rare, Requires Attunement by a Paladin)
Forged from the dragon’s fractured chestplate, this heavy shield ticks faintly when held. The central emblem — a broken hourglass — glows with pale gold when divine magic flows through it.
Properties:+2 AC.
Once per long rest, as a reaction, you may freeze a moment in time:
When a creature within 10 ft takes damage, you can halt the attack in midair. Until the end of your next turn, that damage is suspended — if you strike the attacker before then, the damage disperses harmlessly as motes of light.
Whenever you use Lay on Hands, faint gears turn beneath the recipient’s skin as time itself knits their wounds. The first time you use Lay on Hands each day, add +10 HP restored.
The artificers forged these shields for their temporal sentinels — paladins sworn to protect both flesh and future.
-For the Artificer – The Aion Engine Core
(Wondrous Item, Very Rare, Requires Attunement by an Artificer)
A spinning gyroscopic core salvaged from the dragon’s heart, its internal gears whispering across the seconds. You can graft it into an existing infusion or wear it as a power pack.
Properties: Adds +1 bonus to spell attack rolls and +1 to your spell save DC.
Once per long rest, as a bonus action, you may stabilise time around yourself for 1 minute:
You and your constructs gain resistance to all damage from opportunity attacks.
You may re-roll one failed ability check, saving throw, or attack roll per round, taking the new result.
If you or one of your infusions drops to 0 HP, the core emits a surge of temporal energy, immediately restoring 2d8 HP and granting advantage on the next attack or spell.
The Aion Engine hums with the last pulse of the Temple’s power — a fragment of eternity seeking a craftsman’s hand.
-For the Cleric – The Hourglass of Saint Verena
(Wondrous Item, Rare, Requires Attunement by a Cleric)
A small, radiant hourglass whose sand glows silver when inverted. The relic hums faintly with divine resonance — both a focus and a warning that time is sacred.
Properties: When you cast a healing spell of 1st level or higher, you may choose one creature healed by it; that creature also gains +2 AC until the start of your next turn.
Once per long rest, you can turn back the moment of death:
As a reaction when a creature within 30 ft dies, flip the hourglass — they return to life with 1 HP and the spell Revivify immediately activates without using a spell slot or components.
While attuned, you always know the exact time of day and can sense distortions in time magic within 60 ft (a faint shimmer or hum).
Saint Verena was the artificers’ patron saint of mercy — a cleric who measured every heartbeat against eternity.
-In the centre of the discoveries lies a small, inert shard — a fragment of the Time Core, still ticking faintly.
When placed within a magic circle or divine altar, it could reopen a rift to the Temple — or close it forever.
...
A heard of folks of all kinds seem to close in on our position. Simple folk by the look of them, they look utterly defeated. A human woman by the name of Sera approaches and naturally enquires into our presence. Killian engages in his regular performance describing the events that transpired in the temple. Afterwards she solemly informs us of the events that followed on the surface. It is nothing short of a catastrophe. Natural disaster's have ripped through the land causing the destruction of homes, businesses and the deaths of many, anomalies in the fabric of time have caused disappearances. Family, friends and livestock. The folks that survived are making their way to a mass gathering of the regional settlements to discuss what to do next. We find ourselves being persuaded to join them.
All these people are the victims of a crime caused by fools dabbling in things they don't understand and I'm not just talking about the artificers. These are simple people, they don't understand what has happened to them, they are looking for an explanation, something or someone to blame for their world collapsing around them and we are the ones at the centre of it all.
Killian, Lairion and I are on high alert, even with the authority of the crown to investigate the folk here don't care either way. I inform my collegues that they should be ready to run if things go down hill but looking around the people seem utterly defeated. A couple of side eyes and glances but nothing to worry about right now, that will come later when we are at the gathering.
-Note-I've noticed that Killian's care free cockiness isn't there anymore ? Still the main character of our exploits but more serious fervour akin to a religious fanatic seems to have taken over. I wonder what's happened to him ?
