Personal history
Merthaac's parent were running away from "hunters" within the Atrian Empire when Merthaac was born. Though Merthaac's birth caused his parent to be unable to out run the "hunters". When the "hunters" caught up to Merthaac's parents and killed them they also found baby Merthaac hidden in a tree stump nearby. Seeing potential of a young corruptible mind the "hunters" brought Merthaac back to there base.
They assigned three trainers to mold him into a blade to use against others. Dourholim Battlemaul, an ancient Dwarven Cleric of War and follower of Clangeddin Silverbeard. Dourholim taught Merthaac the wisdom needed to read people and basic though skewed knowledge of the world. Yeslayna Qinfir, a Half-Elf Ranger who taught him how to survive on his own in many different situations. Then there was Halt, a Human Rouge who through harsh training and many life threatening situations turned Merthaac into a hardened killer, trained to unflinchingly end who or whatever Halt told him to. The "hunters" plan was a good one, zero contact with those outside of the facility and trained handlers to mold Merthaac into what they wanted. But they had made an error.
The motherly cook for the facility took care of Merthaac in his brief and few down times and did her best to instill a sense of good in him so that he would be more than just a mindless killer. When the cooks actions were found out they punished her, using her as an example for why one should not disobey them. Though there plan backfired. On the day of the disciplinary actions Halt and Yeslayna were out on a mission, and Merthaac upon seeing what was happening to the kind cook lashed out at the facility members. With his gods power gone Dourholim was unable to catch Merthaac as he killed the facility member, but he didn't have to. Doutholim used the cook as an example by crushing her skull and throwing the body at Merthaac. Merthaac for the first time in a long time felt a mission compromising flaw that he had thought he'd bested many years ago. With his actions and the death of the cook Merthaac made a decision to flee, to put his skills to the test and evade those who trained him.
For days Merthaac fled through the forest and hills till he arrived near a medium sized town. Tired and hungry Merthaac was an easy target. Magical darkness descended upon him whilst magical shackles restrained him. Last thing Merthaac felt was the cudgel hitting the back of his head.
