The Ethereal Bard

by Luke Thomas

Dear Diary,

We survived the swarm, though for a moment, I thought the mine would be our tomb.

Hayley turned the tide. She conjured a sickening, swirling mist that clung to the damp ceiling and descended on the battlefield like a shroud. The sorrowsworn choked on it, their unnatural vitality withering. Alistan, ever the bulwark, held the line, side-stepping the snapping mandibles of a phase spider to shove a staggering undead straight into my sister's poisonous cloud.

Gael was a machine, grunting with effort as he loosed arrow after arrow, while his fey spirit—a creature of fragile wings and a razor-sharp blade—swept through the enemy ranks. Even Liliana, though severed from the divine conduit of her paladin oaths, fought with a terrifying grace. Her steel is still deadly. Ileas wove subtle enchantments into his words, causing the monsters to tremble and hesitate just long enough for us to strike.

It felt like we fought for days, but eventually, the last spider curled in on itself and died.

The silence returned, but the gnawing hunger did not. The curse wasn't tied to the monsters; it’s the mine itself. Ileas, trying to talk his way out of wandering off mid-battle, claimed he was chasing satyr girls. In a mine. Full of zombies. I didn't have the energy to argue. He did, however, map out the layout ahead during his "excursion."

We explored the level, finding nothing but dead ends and rusting equipment, so we returned to the elevator. We descended deeper, slowing at every tunnel mouth to peer into the gloom. Ancient dwarven signs warned of gas pockets, but we saw no living soul. Finally, we reached the bottom.

This was the newest excavation. The tunnels were narrower, the timber beams pale and young, with ore veins still glinting in the rock. But as we walked, the stone vanished beneath layers of white silk. Webs. Thick, sticky, and everywhere. The floor crawled with thousands of normal spiders, fleeing something bigger.

Then, the webbing thinned, replaced by singular, rope-thick strands. We found a hole in the wall, blasting us with the scent of sewage—our goal. The back door to Hillfield.

We moved to cross the chasm on a set of recently laid planks. The moment we stepped near the breach, the magical hunger vanished, leaving us light-headed with relief. But the reprieve was short-lived.

As Liliana stepped onto the planks, they gave way. She barely scrambled back as a massive Phase Spider, the broodmother of this hell, crawled up from the abyss.

It was a nightmare of chitin and speed. It entangled us in webs before we could react. From the darkness, Carrion Crawlers—giant, wriggling centipedes that reeked of death—surged forward to feast.

The broodmother bit Hayley, sending her stumbling back and shattering the spell she was weaving. With blinding speed, it turned on Ileas. Its fangs sank in, and the bard went rigid, paralyzed.

I reacted on instinct. "Ignis!" I roared, pulling a *Wall of Fire* into existence. The flames roared to the ceiling, burning away the restraining webs and creating a barrier of heat. But the monster didn't care. It powered *through* the fire, grabbed the paralyzed Ileas, and phased into the Ethereal Plane.

"Ileas!"

I summoned a fire elemental to hold back the darkness and opened my Third Eye, piercing the veil between worlds. I could see them—ghostly outlines in the gray mist. The spider was cocooning Ileas, preparing him for later.

On the other side of the chasm, Alistan and Liliana were wading through swarms of Carrion Crawlers, their swords wet with ichor. Hayley, recovering from the bite, summoned a bridge of solid ice to span the gap, giving us a path to regroup. Just in time, too—the spider phased back into the Material Plane right next to Gael, its fangs dripping with poison.

We focused everything we had on it. We drove it back, forcing it to retreat into the Ethereal Plane again. But I wasn't letting it escape. I could still see it. I reached out with my magic, gripping the creature across the planar divide, and brought the weight of the weave down upon it. I squashed it like a bug.

The monster was dead, but Ileas was still stuck in the Ethereal Plane, paralyzed and heavily injured. He was gesturing wildly at something—other victims, cocooned but alive in the ghost-realm.

We couldn't reach him. But Liliana... Liliana had a plan. A plan so insane it had to be hers.

She approached a smaller, surviving phase spider. She tried to *convince* it to retrieve him. The beast, naturally, lunged to eat the helpless bard. But Ileas, shaking off the paralysis just enough, desperate and adrenaline-fueled, *jumped* the spider. He grappled it. The creature panicked and instinctively shifted back to the Material Plane—bringing Ileas with it.

It worked. I still can't believe it worked.

We were battered, exhausted, and covered in spider silk. I cast *Tiny Hut* right there in the mine. We slept in a bubble of force while centipedes and spiders crawled across the outside of the opaque shell. It was not a restful night.

This morning, we crawled through the hole and dropped into the Hillfield sewers. The stench was horrific—old, stagnant water and centuries of waste. We navigated the muck, discovering there were levels even deeper than this, but our path lay upward. We climbed ladder after rusty ladder until we reached a large, empty cistern.

In the center was a stone slab lift, operated by heavy iron chains. Ancient, but robust. We took it up.

The transition was jarring. We emerged into a large, circular room, bathed in warm, clean light. Double doors stood ahead, flanked by statues of knights holding swords to their chests. No webs. No smell.

We are in Hillfield. Now, we find the plant. Now, we break the hold on this city.
