Personal history

Raised by his mother, Kai struggled with loneliness. In his free time, he spent his days pickpocketing random people—and often getting beaten for being a tiefling. One day, during yet another attempt at theft, he was caught by a higher-up in the Thieves’ Guild: Eric Strongarm. Instead of punishing him, Eric was impressed by Kai’s talent and took him under his wing.

As the years passed, Kai grew within the guild. His mentor, Eric Strongarm, rose through the ranks, and Kai was given more and more responsibility. When Kai turned twenty-four, he was assigned a lucrative mission—to steal from a noble’s estate, with the promise of great reward. But something went wrong. The guards caught him, and the treasure was lost, though Kai barely managed to escape.

Eric was furious over this careless failure. When he finally found Kai, he decided to make an example of him—beating him nearly to death and breaking off one of his horns to instill fear in others.

Barely clinging to life, Kai begged the gods for help, but no one answered. As his blood spilled into the dirt, a fire sparked beside him. From the flames emerged a devil who called himself Vilus. The devil offered Kai his life back—in exchange for service. For the first time in his life, Kai felt purpose. And so, he accepted.
